I've just read elsewhere on this 'site that 189 is the maximum number of passengers for which the 737-800 is certified (excluding children carried on others' laps, of course).

As someone who has considered how seriously we should take MOL's reported statement that he wishes to replace toilets with seats, I now wonder whether the maximum cited above is true and, if it is, how easy it might be to change. (Ryanair 737s are configured with 189 seats already.)

Does anyone know?

Thank you!

MOL's statement is pure spin. He can't introduce paid for loo's unless there is also a free alternative. Revenue collection would also be a big issue. IIRC you are correct about the maximum capacity of this aircraft, plus serious reconfiguration work would need to be done to the cabin even if it wasn't!

Plus even if you could fit in more seats you would legally need another cabin crew member as soon as you hit 200 so it probably wouldn't be worthwhile.
