Time to share the best places to dine on overnights in the great land of Oz. Successful venues must be excellent quality, reasonably priced and there must be more than two items on the plate. Over to you.:)

Rockhampton would have to be the most expensive place in QLD. I admit our budget on o/nights runs only to pub meals, but prices in Rocky are maybe 50% higher than equivalent establishments elsewhere.

Best in Rocky: Criterion hotel or Heritage hotel

Best in Gladstone: Grand Hotel or Yacht Club

Best in Roma: KFC :suspect:

Cooktown: The resort

When in Melbourne, try the steak at the Balaclava Hotel in Carlisle Street. The pub/pokie atmosphere belies the quality of the kitchen, the $25-odd eye fillet is one of the juiciest and best-tasting steaks I've had, and beats fare that other restaurants charge double for hands down. You might run into some interesting St Kilda type characters in the bar, and it generally makes for a colourful and interesting evening :ok:

The only better steaks I've had in Australia have been at the Steakhouse at New Quai, Docklands, they're pricey but will cut your bill in half on a Tuesday which makes it excellent value, and the quality of the food is outstanding, that is world class kind of outstanding.

In Brisbane, there's Cha Cha Char, the Wagyu is out of this world (they've collected the Best Steak Award several times), and I haven't even tried the top of the range steak which will probably make a grown man weep ;) it's very pricey though and their excellent wine list can blow out the damage exponentially, but worth a once-off for a celebration, or for the Check and Training captains reading this, because you're worth it :E

I have spent 1 night in Roma, and the final choice of cuisine was forced upon me.

Having waited for over an hour and a half for our meals at the faux Irish pub (and watching everyone else get served, while the waitress resolutely refused to make eye contact) we moved on to the only remaining dining facillity in town. :ugh: :yuk:

My 7' tall co-pilot took the double bed in the onsite cabin we were sharing; there were no blankets available in said cabin; Co-pilot thought he was dying at 2 am and (very noisily) thumped around, got a cab and went to the hospital. :uhoh:

My one night in Roma was, old friend, the worst overnight I have ever had - the KFC was the high point - and no, I am not in a hurry to return! :=

That would be when Brian and his wife had the lease. He was always p!ssed by 5.00 pm and by 7.00 pm she and the cook were throwing plates at each other. He had a mongrel dog that wandered around the bar and dining room. Funny to watch but few ate there when they were licensees.

They've gone and the place is vastly improved.

The Golden Dragon is east one block and the Club Motel east two blocks. Both excellent.

A cheaper but great restaurant in Brisbane city is Pane e Vino, cnr Charlotte and Albert Sts. It does pasta and decent sized Italian mains. It's one of the few restaurants in the CBD that doesn't cost millions but still has nice food, good atmosphere and a decent wine list. Davids on Elizabeth Street does good Chinese food, but the decor's really naff, last renovated in about 1985 . Himalayan Cafe in New Farm is fabulous with a great atmosphere (it's run by a group of Tibetans and Sherpas), but a liittle harder to get to from town.

Saint George: the Riverland Motor Inn has a great restaurant, IMO equivalent to any top restaurant in Oz.

Broken Hill: the really touristy looking joint on top of the hill does great food, despite the first impression that says 'overpriced tourist trap'. It had particularly nice steak and biggest eye fillet I'd ever seen.

Birdsville: the Birdsville Hotel, best restaurant in town. Also the only restaurant in town. :E

Darwhine: Bring a cut lunch
Despite having more restaurants per head than any other oz city most reportedly are poor to ****house and hugely expensive. Cant say what pubs do but if its in Mitchell street think $$$$$$
Havent been to the sailing klab for a while, they were good and welcomed crews but you need a taxi. The Mindil markets on thursday and sunday wildly overrated/expensive/crowded and noisy.
It seems if something isnt broke up here, they tear it down to fix it

And here is me thinking Darwin had awesome food!

If you're after 5 star dining then Darwin does not really have it, but if you are after good food you can't really go past Hungry Jacks in Palmerston. Its the last one if you are heading west until Geraldton WA, so you should tuck in while you still can.

Have to also rate the Darwin Sailing Club for a feed. Top food and a great venue, :ok:.

Roma - BC's Bar and Grill, 8/10

Charleville - Depends where Mick the local chef is in town. Last time I was there, it was Cattle Camp. RSL rates as being alright too.

Windorah - The local pub, Western Star Hotel. Otherwise, Coopers Cabins also put on a great feed, almost like home cooked style.

Birdsville - Well, only the pub there. The bakery is definitely the place for breakfast and lunch though, except in the off season when it's shut. Then you're options are the 7 course meal at the pub (6 pack and a pie).

Mount Isa - Hmmmmm, not really much better than any of the others there. If you want a heart clogging feed though, try the Overlander Hotel.

Boulia - The Australian Hotel. Good crumbed steak there as well.

Toowoomba - Great Indian restaurant down on the main drag. Can't remember the name of it, but it's directly across from Wow Sight and Sound.

Brisbane - The Edinburgh Hotel in Kedron

Karumba - The Tavern down on the waterfront (at Karumba Point). Otherwise there's also a good seafood restaurant in Karumba itself. 1kg of Banana Prawns for about $20!

Just my 2 cents, :ok:.

What a lovely place to overnight anygivensunday99! You forgot about old man Karl at the airport for a Pie & Coke!

Gove - can't go past the Arnhem Club.

Darwin - the places on the marina at Cullen Bay are all pretty good, roughly the same prices as those on Mitchell St and a lot quieter. You do however miss out on the backpackers! Dinah Beach Yacht Club is good, cheap too.

Most places in Brisbane city centre are expensive for basic meals, but there is bar/pub down some stairs about a block from the casino (can't think of name), might be corner of George and Adelaide, that does $10 steak, pasta etc.

In Darwin, Mitchell st may not be budget price, but you can normally find something decent for under $20. Was there last week and ate at an Italian cafe opposite the Value Inn (not sure what it was called) but it was quite ok (and the passing parade of backpackers assured the neck got some exercise :E).

If you have time for breakfast in Darwin, walk down the casino (about 15-20 minutes from city centre, so clears the head from previous nights beers :ok:) and they do a good buffet breakfast for $13.50 (I think it said tuesday to saturday so check before you go).

In Hobart, The Shamrock pub in Liverpool st does really nice food at reasonable price.

In Sydney anywhere around Crown st in Surry Hills is good (Trinity bar, Dolphin etc), and the Strawberry Hills hotel in elizabeth st (near Central station) does good cheap meals every night. If you like gourmet pizza, the Australia hotel at Rocks is the place to go.

The Irish Club on Elizabeth Street is meant to be good and reasonably priced, but I can't personally vouch for it.

TWB: Spotted Cow, Weis' Restaurant, Dads Pies, Wilsonton Hotel

Isa: Buffs or Irish Club. Doms is good for Italian but pricey.

Cairns: The Water Bar has the BEST ribs........Rexs Burger Bar is the one aforementioned & is very good; as is Sheridan Seafood for Fish & Chips. Mother India is the most authentic Indian outside India.

Mount Moffatt (pop 75) just northwest of CS has a mexican cafe / burger joint owned by actual mexicans, and boasts the BEST mex anywhere, plus the BIGgEST burgers anywhere.

CV: RSL; the Mulga Country Motel adjacent the aerodrome -expensive but good quality, though a little inconsistant.

Roma: The Maranoa - anything you want, as long as its deep fried! Wishing Well Motel used to have a great cook, dunno if they still have the place.

TI: The Federal - good tucker, good prices, GREAT steak, cold beer!

Weipa: The Football club.

You're probably thinking of CAFE UNO, they do a damn fine Prosciutto Pizza :)

Would have to agree that Thailicious is a good spot too, although during the wet upstairs with no Aircon and the flash going out gear on you tend to get a tad sticky over a few drinks. Just an excuse to drink more I suppose!

So they putting you boys up in the Value Inn these days? I suppose you get what you pay for :E

Mitchellis do great pizza, but it's only pizza after all...

2nd vote for the Beachfront - usually good, and reasonable price (for Darwin).

The Parap Tavern has a pretty good steak joint, and Hoggies on Mitchell St too if that's your thing.

Leave it to a pilot to think of this to get the most out of his/her flight manual. And who knew hotel clothes irons were good for something besides making dark streaks on white clothes!

INSTRUCTIONS:

PLACE inverted IRON in the JEPP BINDER RINGS (see below)
PREHEAT iron on HIGH for 5 minutes
To steam vegetables, you must put in water and use manual sprayer
It usually takes less than 10 minutes to steam....

Hamburgers, steaks and small PIZZA can be placed DIRECTLY on the IRON FACE

Use IRONING BOARD with towel tablecloth if entertaining guests.
Do NOT use HOTEL Drinking glasses.
Plastic cups may be obtained from galley 2.

For CUBAN SANDWICHES obtain another TOP IRON for steaming and pressing.
