A Qantas Airbus A330-300, registration VH-QPI performing flight QF-68 from Hong Kong (China) to Perth,WA (Australia) with 206 passengers and 13 crew, was about 4 hours into the flight near the Indonesian Island of Borneo, when the airplane encountered severe turbulence and deviated from assigned altitude. The seat belt signs came on after the onset of the turbulence. The airplane continued to Perth, where the airplane landed safely. 13 people were transported to local hospitals.

Upon hitting the turbulence passengers, crew and trolleys went "flying" within the cabin, a passenger reported. The captain reported, that two overhead panels and two oxygen masks received damage.

Qantas said, that the encounter was purely a meteorological event with no computer problems being involved. A doctor on board looked after the injured and advised the crew, that no diversion was needed. 6 passengers and 1 crew received minor injuries.

The hospitals reported, that spinal injuries are a concern with those 13 delivered to the hospital. All patients are in a stable condition.

The Australian Transportation Safety Board (ATSB) have opened an investigation.
