I hope everyone has a safe weekend flying in and out of the Silverstone this weekend.
I'm gutted not to be there, so can I ask that anyone who is flying in and out or around the landing pads to take lots of photos.
Of the Helicopters of course :)

Looks to be a few machines there, looking at the pictures on the TV. :ok:

Isn't that what Pilot.Pete asked for here? It would be a pity to create yet another thread on the same subject ;)

Ok here goes,
I have about 700 photo's from the day, mostly the arrivals I am afraid as Managed to zip off at 15.30 and missed the Departures. These are mostly the best ones and the ones that I managed to name and crop last night. If you dont see your Helicopter feel free to PM me with the type, Reg and Colour and I will do my best to see if I have a picture of it.
These are the reduced size Photos so If you do feel the need to right click and "save as" bear in mind I am trying to raise money for my local childrens Hospise "Little Havens" and you could make a small donation and get a Huge 6 meg picture instead sent to you.
Hope you like them.

Make sure you tell me your photo of choice, reg number and Pprune name. PLUS the email address you want the pic sent to

heliboy999 - Thanks for taking the time to post all of those. During the SpeedTV/Fox coverage here in the States, Peter Windsor joked that there were more helicopters in the sky than people on the grid.

Nice also to see that the Columbia Helicopters BV107-II driver who was involved with those hover barge towing tests in Prudhoe Bay has now secured a new job flying a 407... :E

Just goes to show, w-anker bars and white shirts do not make the pilots....

You gents always take off in those pitch attitudes, or were you just trying to put on a show for the fans? I used to wonder why race tracks seem to attract so many heli accidents, seems there's a reason after all.

I was at Denham, which was being used as one of the feeder site, It was quite hectic at times. It also seemed that Heliair had there fairshare of female drives. Must admit that the Pilot of OAMI made perfectly soft landing every time I saw here land. Pictures of all the movements can be found here

......And I thought there was a recession ! Any idea the total number of helicopters that flew in ??

Agaricus bisporus
23rd Jun 2009, 08:14
 Well, with such an empty parking area I'd say you're probably right...

I thought about a quarter of the numbers of the "good old days?"

Remote Hook, I agree with your remark about pitch attitudes. Several of the photos had me thinking "Practce engine failure - GO!".
Silverstone pad gets very very busy, and with many pilots doing multiple shuttles this sometimes translates into a hurry - hurry mentality - hence some of the rather extreme atitudes seen. Having said that it has an impeccable safety record over a couple of decades, partly due to superb organization and control work, and partly due to the discipline and Professionalism of the people wearing white shirts and w*nker bars. (What the hell do you think customers who've paid £500 (each) for two six minute flights expect? Sweaty lumberjack shirts and hobnail boots??? Get real!)
A few pics of some "operational" flying doesn't implicate safety at racetracks or anywhere else. I'm not aware of a racetrack accident ever in the UK, though I am aware that the accident stats in Canada are somewhat diferent to ours...:ugh::ugh:

Best rgds, white shirt & w*nker bars.

There is, but there will always be people who are rich enough to pay £3,000 for a charter and another £700 landing fee (someone said that was what it was, but I could be wrong).

I imagine these kind of "one-off" events are the bulk of onshore charter operators business at the moment.

I flew into Turweston (where there was only another 5 or 6 helicopters) and took the overland transfer to Vale hospitality. Still expensive at £85 per person, but a much more sensible thing to do for owners.

That R22 pilot must be as mad as a box of frogs. He would have paid £520 + VAT + parking charge..... And he must have had to attend the briefing in Redhill.

23rd Jun 2009, 09:15
That R22 pilot goes every year. I understand he has to be first to arrive on the big day. If he doesnt mind paying the landing fee then good on him I say! Eccentric - yes, but mad as a box of frogs?

CYHeli

Just remember that the lack of an accident does not translate to - It was safe. :ugh:

This was one that caught my eye and if this photo was taken from a similar position to other photos, then I would expect a similar attitude to the other aircraft. Mind you I haven't seen the H/V curve for the B407 and it might be fine to be travelling at this speed, accelerating and at that height.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e112/flashover999/B407Extreme.jpg

I'm glad that everyone had a good time and an incident free time.
I have flown into the F1 and bike GP's in Melbourne more than once, and this turn out puts us to shame. Congrats to the organisers and controllers. Job well done.:D

Fantastic photos.:ok:

Looks like a great fly in but I agree with the others about the take off profile of some of the machines. B407 and a Long Ranger really caught my eye. It amazing what a crowd does to some pilots or maybe they were mustering:}

CYHeli - if there are no pax on board the 407 then is there an issue? It looks to me like the pilot is enjoying the 407 for all its worth. Caught up in the buzz of the moment maybe...

heliboy999
23rd Jun 2009, 11:04
As you can see from my photo's I was on hand to witness almost all of the approaches and I can say that they were all flown with skill and "Commercial" attitude. Seeing pilots jugde the speeds of the helicopters in front of them and adjust their own approaches to compensate all the way up the line was a sight to behold. Some could even havebeen classed as Formation approaches! When PAX are aboard we have to ensure smooth approach and safety safety safety! Once the PAX have gone the aircraft is yours again and a few minutes to enjoy that feeling of being a pilot once again. I am sure that a few seconds of fast accelaration and a more nose down attitude than usual is less of a risk than say, 60 minutes longlining over a forest somewhere in the backwoods.
This event shows the true skill of the pilots, after all the training and the regulation, they, with the help of the wonderful ground controllers manage to fly a difficult and sometimes rapidly changing approach without out the help of radar. The pilots use there own common sense and decisions with the help of some very simple well thought out rules to produce an amazing spectacle that is Silverstone GP.
Its just a shame that the Men in the yellow coats with little blue badges are always on hand to try and "catch" pilots who might have a faded boarding card or something else just as petty. They will not be hapy until all helicopter commercial flights are a thing of the past.
Well done all for a spectacular day.

Heliboy999 - great piccies! Good on you for uploading them all, many thanks.

PS re 'mad as a box of frogs' flying in with his R22 - what on earth is wrong with that?! If there are just the two of you and you don't want to stew in traffic for hours on end, what's the point in paying for a bigger ship? Makes perfect sense to me. There are too many heli-snobs out there, mostly non-owners I suspect.

As regards to 'mad as a box of frogs' having to be first in each year, I don't think that's quite right as I was! And in a R44 which, even though i bought one, I must agree is quite easily the ugliest heli in the world.

To all the critics of the departure techniques.......

"Have you flown in and out of Silverstone?"

Then you will be familiar with the expression "Go Now!"

You will also be familiar with the requirement to be above 500ft as you pass the grandstand at the end of the FATO.

This forum used to be a place to ask questions, share experience and generally expand your knowledge. Every thread seems to eventually turn into a place for the armchair critics to question aircraft captain's decisions on the basis of a photo or third hand information.

In the words of the Krays "You're talking too loud and you ain't got nothing to say"

As an offshore pilot, all those pics makes those onshore jobs look like a lot of fun. I would love to pole around and have some fun like that. But then again, the grass is always greener in this business....

Do the likes of Bond/Bristow/CHC and BIH not supply any aircraft anymore for the Silverstone weekend ? Remember years gone by with fleets of 332's, 61's but the largest a/c that seems to be there now is a 76. Is this the operators decision or just a lack of demand for a/c this size ?

Bristow don't as it's "not their core business". They don't do any on-shore charter work anymore.

Ref Bristow CHC etc. In 2001 they had a backlog on the NS due to weather and pulled all their aircraft from the event with a couple of days to go. Operators who had signed charter agreements were left in a lot of trouble with no financial comeback. Fortunately there has been little need for the NS operators since, and as an ex NS pilot who happily flew Silverstone in S61s now on the on shore side of the fence and someone who got caught out by what happened in 2001 a lot of trust was lost.

Quiet year this year, although a trip to the advisory hold at about 16:30 made me think a bit.

Never ceases to amaze me how the flow is controlled the way it is and how all the pilots and ground crews manage to keep their humour in the conditions. I spent 20 minutes in our terminal watching the boys and girls work their socks off and managing to still smile as they held open doors and helped with starps.

Lovely pictures and thanks for going to the trouble of sharing.

The other reason why helicopter movements are down is that they improved the road system into Silverstone which meant less people got fed up with stewing the traffic jam for hours on end vying to sell their in-laws in order to fly in.

Then the prices Silverstone charge are eyewatering.

If one is worried about Flight Safety you should look outside Silverstone because there used to be a couple of choking points which I always thought are more than interesting.

Well done on everyone for getting the job done.:D:D:D:D

IMHO there's force in what you say except that you overstate it.

The forum is still a a place to ask questions, share experience and generally expand knowledge. Not every thread ends up that way.
I still read the forum regularly, although not as closely as I used to in the 7 years I was the Mod, and my impression is that the particular aspect you criticise is no worse than it used to be.

If it gets silly with cost, let me know you can put the photos on one of the commercial (fast) boxes I've got for free, I tried to do what you have achieved a few years ago but I clearly lack the creative eye, my photos were rubbish.

Well done, see you soon.

Thanks for the offer Veeany. I am working on my own gallery site and will host them all on there eventually, thankyou for the offer though.
I just wish i could have stayed for the departures, I think there could have been some really amazing shots to be had, still.... feet up in the office with a cup of tea at 16.30 on a Silverstone day was a real bonus!

Didnt see the 92 there or doesnt the owner go to the motor racing. Great pics by the way, I like looking at the various paint schemes to see what works and what doesnt. Like the EC120 with the blue and silver copy of the Swiss machine and the red, yellow and black AS350 - that was nice also.

Also couple of questions for you guys, why the hell is it so expensive to operate in and out of there. Thats about $1500 nzd which is crap.

Also whats the heliport like at the new track they will be moving to and will all operators get screwed with landing fees there as well.

So....

I think that's a great idea - sorry I missed it on your first email (didn't read the words, went straight to the photos)

Gave the donation site a try and it did not work. Message said "problems with the site, sorry", etc

I can send you a cheque (old fashioned, I know) made out to you or the charity if you PM me your address.

Or, if the site gets fixed I can try again.

Justgiving.com is having issues after (apparently) a boned upgrade. They keep saying everything's ok, then a bunch of users report problems. More info here: JustGiving CEO pledges refund over upgrade cockup ? The Register (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/06/29/just_giving_update/)

I tried again. I don't have a Paypal and used the credit card donation. Here is the result. As I said, PM me and I will send a cheque - your photo's are great and the idea of using them to raise funds like this is generous of you (and a blindingly good idea).

John

Had a lot of messages this year asking where this years pictures are. I couldnt get a decent spot to take shots from this year due to the new layout and lots of Yellow jackets constantly asking me what I was doing in this place or that place (The big camera and lens didnt give them a clue) I think the En-mass presence of the CAA put a lot of people on edge so maybe next year will be a better chance.
