Great news for the EK guys - when you thought you had it all - a new voice in the cockpit -

Emirates has signed a memorandum of understanding with Honeywell to purchase the company's new SmartLanding safety system for its entire fleet of aircraft, apart from the A380. A software upgrade to Honeywell's runway awareness and advisory system, SmartLanding provides pilots with visual and audible alerts tied to the stability of an approach - too high, too fast or not configured properly and later during the landing in an attempt to reduce runway excursions. Honeywell says runway events cause an average of 30 accidents a year and 97% of those involve an excursion, where an aircraft either does not reach, leaves the side, or bypasses the end of a runway. Once the aircraft lands, SmartLanding provides call-outs for long landing if the aircraft extends beyond a pre-determined touchdown zone, together with call-outs of runway distance remaining during rollout.

Also included is a check for inadvertent barometric altimeter correction errors, which Honeywell says continues to be a contributing factor in controlled flight into terrain accidents and incidents. RAAS, and by association, SmartLanding, gets its information from Honeywell's enhanced ground proximity warning system. RAAS provides situational awareness on the ground by comparing an aircraft's actual position to stored runway information. Emirates equipped its fleet with Honeywell's RAAS two years ago. The carrier plans to complete the required software upgrade for adding SmartLanding to its 121-strong Boeing 777-200/300 and Airbus A330 and A340 fleet by year-end.

Whilst I think it's great that the OEM and Emirates are embracing safety by splurging on this system which (most of us) have managed without to date, I'm think Honeywell should have concentrated on a SmartTakeoff system before they got onto the landing bit.

Looking forward to more yelling around the "silent cockpit" below 10000'.
"Approaching Runway 07" during T/O roll in MAA is so utterly comforting and definitely need to know - not!

Maybe the guys in KUL were stepped on by the lady yelling the oh so important "approaching runway XX left", nicely established on its ILS, and thereby missing the landing clearance!

Less distraction on ground during cockpit prep, giving us more time to deal with the software screw-ups of our laptops, but ever more of such in flight when I really want my peace to concentrate!

Once again EK revives Kafka.

Eklawyer, I have to agree. Wouldn't it be nice to know why crews are getting airborne in Mel
on a 15 hour flight with 98 hours in the last 28 days?
Why we are being consistently reassured by manglement that this cannot be tiring due to
the isolated studies they have funded blindly ignoring the flights that have gone before to
make up those 98 hours?
Why have maximum monthly hours been made a target and not a limit?
Factor in all other restrictions and changes in the company with low morale resulting, and
I submit that they are showing a firm grip on the inconsequential.

I am all in favour of safety aids, but maybe the crew should not be overlooked as a resource.
