Was there in the evening and some very impressive scrape marks on the runway - little bit more than nose wheel burst I reckon. Any more info anyone?

Incident: Saudi MD11 at Khartoum on Jun 9th 2009, burst nose gear tyres
By Simon Hradecky, created Tuesday, Jun 9th 2009 14:16Z, last updated Tuesday, Jun 9th 2009 14:39Z
A Saudi Arabian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-11 freighter, registration HZ-ANB performing a freight flight from Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) to Khartoum (Sudan) with 2 crew, burst the nose gear tyres on landing on Khartoum's runway 18 sending sparks until the airplane came to a stand still at around 5:30am local (02:30Z). Airport fire services quickly put out a resulting small fire.

The airport had to be closed for 5 hours until the airplane could be moved off the runway.

I wonder how close Khartoum was to seeing a "Tokyo"?

What is the problem with this a/c? Is it the crews cant land the thing, or can it be not be controlled, for it to be landed correctly?

Maybe it started out as 3 (I mean 4) pointer, then they wheelbarrowed it down the runway until the nose gear realised the futility of carrying on and just gave up. :}

Thought the same, by what I heard from people on the ground they did land it nose first - luckily not the same outcome as in Narita.

Don't make comments about landing characteristics of an a/c you have no command time in! The MD-11 has the highest FAA type rating failure rate, it must be flown precisely especially in the landing phase. Saudia would have been at max landing weight, vapp of 167 kts, try that on for size and throw in some wind and remember you're in Africa. We all screw up, but this machine can bite you HARD. Ask Fed-Ex.

Hello poina

Yes agree with you.

We all screw up and all a/c will bite, if not flown as they should be.
