What I am trying to find out is do SAR Helicopters in the RAF/RN have any form of Height Stab Controls to assist the pilot/crew whilst they are winching ???:confused:

Sea Kings have a stab system which is normally engaged throughout flight to assist control. For winching, a Flight Control System (FCS) can be used to transition into the hover over the sea using a combination of the stab, rad alt and doppler. Once the aircraft is in it's hover, the pilot can manoeuvre with the height controlled by the FCS/rad alt. There is also an auxiliary hover trim adjacent to the rear door, which allows the aircrewman or observer to have limited hover control if required. This method of getting into the hover only works over the sea for obvious reasons so if it's overland or cliffs then it's back to good old hand-eye stuff.
