Hi all,I have recently brought a set of Jepps and am currently studying for the IREX. I have started noticing that some of the routes required to be found to answer the questions in the book do not exist on the Jepps chart. For example. Flying from Cunderdin to Cue using W631, work out the alternate minima. However, when I look on AU(LO)1 or Perth 10-1 (H/L) AREA, W631 is not represented.Am I missing something, or do the JEPPS charts not show every route available. If this is the case, how do you go answering the question in the exam if the same situation was to arrive?I am using the Bob Tait IREX book. This is by no means a dig at the Bob Tait series. I have used his books for all my training and found them very helpful. I just thought people might asked what book I was using for study.Stretch06

Your problem is not with your Jepps but with the currency of the practice questions you're using. Not once during my IREX study did I find a practice exam, set of questions etc. that did not have at least one non-existant route designator/SID/STAR etc. on it somewhere. The good news is - when you do your actual IREX, you're guaranteed questions with current data.

I've used Jepps from the get-go with everything IFR - the only hurdle you'll have to overcome (and you might be OK already) is knowing where the AIP information is contained in the Jepp format. For instance, when I first started out, nobody told me that the navaid information is not in the Airport Directory (as in ERSA), but in a separate Radio Aids section - as is other navaid information found in different spots in the AIP book. The only other tiny thing will be in the IREX when you get numerous references to ERC charts, e.g. "refer ERC(L)2", and you'll need to know which Jepp ERC to go for. This is hardly a problem once you know which aerodromes they're talking about.

Once I got my head around where the info was (and Bob Tait is great for this as he gives you Jepp references as well), I never looked back - blitzed the IREX using Jepps without any problems. Good luck.

Bob Tait has a new edition of his IREX book that come out in December last year. Maybe you have an older edition??? If you get really stuck just give him a call, hes a top fella and im sure that he would be happy to help and give you the updated question.

There will be lots of similar questions, and I'm not sure if they'd all be updated with the latest data. Some of the practice exams I used when doing mine, even though they were "latest editions", still used outdated data. There's pretty much no perfect way to do it, you just have to work out what the question's asking, whether there's an equivalent airway or data you can use to answer the question etc.

It's not just airways, there will be questions that make references to SID/STAR data, approach minima, MSAs etc. for which there's no correct answer. Like everything else, the key thing is you interpret what the question is asking and how to extract the information from the published docs. In some ways it's good getting dodgy questions as it makes you analyse your answers and your reasoning for them many times over (annoying but it seems to work). As long as your knowledge of the procedures and law is good going into the exam, you'll be right. The answer itself is not as important as knowing how to get there.

When I did IREX recently there was a question about a flight to a destination that was not on a charted route. So, do what you would do if you had to fly there, work out LSALT and other data manually using the 50 nm wide track, grid LSALT, MSA's etc.

If you can use the jepps documents with the airservices enroute charts which are far superior.

Depends on how Nanna and Pop are feeling on entry :} (perth joke)

Stretch06,

I would say your particular issue would be, as others said, simply the practice questions, there are the odd mistakes here and there with Bob Tait - it would be hard to keep his questions up to date with all the Airservices changes. You may already have noticed this, but I often find with Jepp ERCs that some designated routes will be printed on one chart but not another, even though they cover the same area (esp. on the east coast). In your case both both ERC lo 1 and ERC lo 2 cover the Cunderdin to Cue route, only ERC lo 2 has a printed route.
