The 66-year-old de Havilland DH84 Dragon airliner will fly the 75th Air Mail anniversary first day covers between Inverness and Kirkwall.

On Friday, the 75th anniversary of Britain’s first scheduled air mail service will be marked with a re-enactment by the Inverness-based Fresson trust aviation charity with ceremonies at both Inverness and Kirkwall airports.

A limited edition first day cover will be carried by a biplane airliner similar to the machine used by the late Capt Ted Fresson’s Highland Airways on May 29, 1934.

The event will be marked at Inverness Airport at 11.15am with the handover of the first day covers to the pilot flying the Dragon by representatives of the Fresson Trust, Royal Mail and Highlands and Islands Airports Limited, prior to departure to Kirkwall.

A second celebration will take place at Kirkwall at around 12.30pm to accept the incoming Air Mail and hand over the first day covers which will return south to Inverness.
