This has been driving me nuts for the past few weeks. My set-up is Win XP SP3 (upgraded from SP2 last week), Avast Free Edition anti-virus, Zone Alarm firewall, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, 3G Mobile Internet and Firefox 3.0.10, Internet Explorer & Google Chrome browsers.
Whenever I attempt to open a web page with FF or IE, I often get this:
''This page cannot be displayed " with "Cannot find server or DNS error" at the bottom (or 'Resolve' problem indication with Chrome).
If I Refresh or click Home one or two times, I usually get a result. I get the same response even with the firewall or anti-virus turned off and I've checked the SSL in Internet Properties.
The problem started off as an intermittent one but now it occurs almost every time I connect.
Any ideas?

Had almost the same problem with IE7, am using winxp withsp3.

Found it to be a virus, yes I know you are going to say you have run all your virus checkers and everything is clean. I thought so too until I ran "Stinger", it found the virus and got rid of the problem.

You can download Stinger here for free McAfee Threat Center (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/)

Hope that works for you.

Or as an alternative try using a public DNS server and see if it helps. List of servers ans instructions Here: Free fast Public DNS Servers List (http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/)

Kwachon: I ran the McAfee scan and nothing showed up but many thanks anyway.
Green granite: I'd previously changed my public DNS server to OpenDNS settings and that didn't help. I've just given the Scrubit settings on your link a go instead and so far, after a good road test, the problem seems to have been resolved. Much obliged to you.
Steve.
