Hi all

My partner was querying why on airliners there will be for example Boeing 767-200 then the pic caption says 767-223.

He sees it often on pictures of aircraft in magazines where the label on the aircraft says Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 757-500 but the caption underneath says Boeing 757-231 for the same aircraft.

Or an Airbus A320 name on the plane but the caption says A320-214.

How come the captions are different than the names on the fuselage?

If anyone knows and can let us know, cheers.

It's like the different marks of car.

For example, you can have a BMW 320, 318, or a 330. The -214, -236 numbers etc. would indicate a 200 series model with the 14 or 36 bit indicating the spec.

That's by no means a definitive answer because I've mostly made it up but that's what I think.

In the case of Boeing for instance, the first figure relates to the series. The remaining figures (or aplpha numerics) relate to the (original) operator ordering the aircraft. For example an American Airlines B757-223, the 2 denotes that itīs a 200 series, and the 23 identifies it as an American Airlines model (i.e. AAL specifications). Iīm not sure if itīs exactly the same with Airbus. I think that with them itīs more to do with a certain specification (engines/interior configuration etc) than any association with a specific operator.

On a similar note, whats the Airbus designation for the A319's that Easyjet have. (ie the ones with double overwing exits as opposed to single)

Thanks lots for your replies. Hope you have a great Bank Holiday.

All your information has been very helpful and we understand all these designations better.

Cheers again.
