Hi,
I recently found out after bloodtests at OASC and a repeat at a GP that i have this "Gilberts Syndrome" which my doc says has no affect on your life and never will,it's just somehting some people have and don't know they do till they have a bloodtest. It can mean some people from time to time get a little jaundice but other than that nothing.
Well i've been selected for pilot(pending medical/security) and IOT is only a few weeks away, the RAF havn't recieved the results yet, but i wondered for a bit of peace of mind does anyone know if this could affect my medical at all?
Thanks

Well I don't know about the RAF, but certainly as a UK ATPL holder it doesn't. I was told a similar thing a few years ago, I told the CAA and they said it has no effect on my fitness to fly whatsoever. HTH

Popped up for me in 1984, which IIRC is when the RAF started doing full blood tests for annual medicals. Doc "you've got GS" Me " What does that mean?". "Well the bilirubin levels in your blood are above the norm". "And?" "Well that's it". "So what does it mean for me?". "Just that you have more bilirubin than the average". "And?".

So it went on and the end result is that it has no effect on you or your life and should have no effect on a RAF or CAA medical - I carried on in RAF til 2000 and have held a valid Class 1 since 1996.

FWIW bilirubin has a function in the colour of pooh. There is a clever reference to it in the brill novel 'Silence of the Lambs' when Hannibal Lecter diverts the Feds by naming the villain as a William Rubin.

HtH - good luck

It's usually an artefact.

Just to clear up my own initial question and for anyone that ever has the same worry as i did, gilberts syndrome is totally fine,it isn't even a condition, just a slight abnormality of no consequence. I got medical clearence no probs once diagnosis was confirmed.

Thanks for the replies though guys, took the worry away while i was awaiting specialist opinion!
