All parties must be congratulated in trying to carry out a "mission impossible" in the conditions. Tremendous flying.

1 tonne over MAUM??? in a Wessex 3... i have never flown one but surely even with 50kts of wind 1000kgs over weight is not possible...

And then to land on the ship without loosing speed and lift, scarey stuff

Superb flying skills though :ok:

Cant help feeling they skated a bit too quickly around the attack on the Santa Fe sub at Grytviken. That would have been an interesting extra.

Found this elsewhere

'Helicopter Warfare' features daring helicopter missions and extraordinary personal bravery in treacherous environments.

The series highlights the most daring helicopter rescue of the Vietnam War, where an unarmed helicopter used its rotary blades to cut down the jungle's 40-foot-tall bamboo and create a landing space to rescue 100 troops under-fire.

The series also features a courageous helicopter rescue during the Falklands War, which saved the lives of SAS members when their mission backfired due to a ferocious snow-storm.

There is also a helicopter rescue mission in the high altitude and dusty conditions of Afghanistan to find the lone survivor of a US Navy Seal team and a young Navy pilot who fights an enemy tank in the deserts of Iraq.

Hannah Beckerman, Five's Commissioning Editor for Factual, said: "It's a real privilege to hear first-hand the testimonies of the men who fought in some of the most iconic wars of the past 40 years. Through drama reconstruction and fantastic CGI, these stories are brought to life."

David Dugan, Chairman of Windfall Films, said: "This series tells the heroic stories of the most daring helicopter missions ever flown. These pilots share a common trait: they have all flown their machines to the absolutely limit and risked their lives to save others."

G-mady - I think you will find that the Wessex 3 had to wait for 90 knots windspeed to take off and that the helo did a slide over the flight deck to get on - see Roger Perkins book Operation Paraquat.

I thought that it was an amazing bit of flying, all round and the rest of the crew seem to have been severely seen off when it came to the tea and medals. Certainly, Ian Stanley did incredibly well with the flying and got a DSO, but the rest of the team were pretty crucial to success, especially the observer, who of course the other 2 (crashed) helos did not have. He and the other two had to go through it as well!

Unbelievable that the SAS thought that they could get away with it!

There was time to tell the submarine story "if only...." they would stop telling what the are going to tell you, telling you before the break what the are going to tell you, reminding you after the break what they told you four minutes ago.

Stories fantastic, flying incredible, editorialy rubbish if your IQ exceeds 85.

Tancred,
thanks for that, didn't know it was 90kts... Staggering feat really! Slide onto the deck? Would he have the power to hover after the return leg and fuel burn-off?

John R81
Spot on with that post. Have you seen the north sea program on V1? A one hour program only last 30 mins if you sky+ it and skip all the "comming up" and "before the break" moments!!!!

This weeks features a rescue by US Army helicopters, in Vietnam, of 100 trapped GIs, using the main rotor to cut an HLS. One of your exploits SASless??

Tonight's edition about the brave Huey drivers in the Vietnam war and some of the tricks they got up to - like creating a LZ by cutting a vertical tube through 40' bamboo stalks... if you liked Chickenhawk, you'll love this!

On at 8pm tonight but downloadable using Demand Five - Click here (http://demand.five.tv/Episode.aspx?episodeBaseName=C5140710002)

Enjoyed the show last night, very impressed by the skill of those flying on the mission.

Just a thought that they seemed to skim over in the programme..... but can anyone tell me how the Huey would have taken off after a vertical landing through the bamboo? They mentioned a running take-off but surely this wouldn't be easy with thick bamboo covering the take-off run?

Any thoughts to put my mind at rest would be appreciated!

The running take off would have to be from a different site ....if you have to land vertically you definitely have to take off the same way !!!!!

I just found the second episode to watch it online:
Helicopter Warfare 1x02 Vietnam
Ninjavideo.net - Helicopter Warfare 1x02 Vietnam (Divx Mirror) (http://ninjavideo.net/video/25356)

Effluent Man: I think they made (obviously) a vertical take off, you only see a running take off for educational purposes :8

Zero G: I recommend you to read little bit more, there is nothing over the top.

Any U.K. resident volunteering to upload the next episode online? :E

I am pretty sure they said they had to do a running takeoff so it was not for educational reasons.
ZeroG i see you are only a baby (26) so i will let you off lightly ....You should show more respect for your elders and definitely ...betters . You were not there and i suspect you know nothing of what can be done in a dire emergency ....stick to your robbo ......:=
