Hiya All!
For weeks Vista is trying to update itself, but it successfully and continuously fails doing so. The update in question is:
MS .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86
The promising error code states:
Code 800B0100 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
Any suggestions on what to do? :uhoh: :confused: (besides waiting for W7, Linux, or Mac OS) :zzz: :hmm:

Mine too 7777. It keeps reminding me, and I keep saying (to myself) "Well bl**dy get on with it" but it doesn't.
Vista (and Office 2007) are sh1t.
With regard to the latter: How do you get your chosen font (Times New Roman 14pt) to "stick". I go via format>font> select and OK get into the body of the document and it reverts to Arial 10pt on the second line. V. frustrating. Any pointers anyone?

What about CTRL + A, and then select the font you want? It should stick.

How about downloading the installer file (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en) directly from MS, Check that you have the appropriate Windows installer (3.1 v2 - you almost certainly have it) and then install the update by right clicking the file and selecting "run as>administrator"
Should work.
Normally I'd just suggest you disable Norton during updates, but you use Avira I think.

Regarding the update errors, I would imagine that a search on the MS website could be fruitful.

Anybody have any idea why I get several offers a week to update my laptop with KB936330?It updates successfully,then the update comes again!

Can you perform another miracle for me?3 or 4 times a week MS send me an update,KB936330.It always downloads successfully,but the updating messages continue.

Hi Romeo,
kb936330 is listed as "Windows Vista Service Pack 1" - so it looks like MS is trying to get that unfortunate operating system you have into a usable state.
Take a look at the forum below, where it looks like some other people are having the same problem as yourself. It looks like this may take a long, long time to install, so it may be best to leave this do its thing overnight.

All I got when trying to install it on my wife's lap top were error messages, gave up in the end.

I found with Vista install, and Vista SP1 - nothing would work as long as I had in excess of 3GB RAM.
I had to take out three sticks (at 2gb each) to get below the 3GB maximum, do the install/update then put them all back in again.
It even taught Microsoft in Mumbai - they didn't know that it wouldn't work above 3GB either.
I haven't attempted SP2 for the same reason.
It might be worth having a check on what other software/hardware to see if that's the culprit rather than assuming it's MS ?
I have a Kodak easyshare printer dock which has to be used with the associated Kodak EasyShare software.
I eventually discovered that the Kodak software has a problem that causes a certain windows update to "rollback".
The update is presented and installs OK but then the Kodak software causes it to rollback a few minutes later.
The result is that windows keeps presenting/installing the same update over and over again:ugh:
Kodak will not respond to my request for solutions/advice despite there being plenty of evidence around pointing to the easyshare software as the problem. Perhaps it's just as telling that they've not even responded saying it's not their software/they know of no problem.....
I no longer use the printer dock and have removed the easyshare software.
Since then all updates have worked without any problems.
But I can't use the printer dock as they don't offer a "driver only" option.

I finally had too much time at hand to browse (and read!) the small print on the Microsoft website. (I still have the same problem as mentioned above.) Deinstalled various programs, rolled back, but no progress. Tried to install SP2, but it aborted right away. Error code was unchanged: Mr. 0x800B0100 :ugh:
Here's the little bit of progress so far. Went and ran System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821)). After about 30 endless minutes, it completed. What it completed is a mystery to me, since updates still will not install, but it left a vital clue: CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log. What those two tell me is Greek to me; I wonder if there's someone who could please shed some light into these log files? :ouch:

I had the same problem on 25 Laptops at work. They are running Windows Vista Enterprise x64. I couldn't find a fix so i left it until i had more time. When one of the laptops came back i installed SP2 then tried the update and it worked a treat.

Dunno if this is helpful but I had a similar problem on XP. It turned out to be an Internet explorer problem - security settings etc.
Have you been able to install updates previously? Could it be a microsoft validation tool problem?

Dear all,
thanks for your help, you surely pointed me into the right direction and I am beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
I tried the stand-alone update of KB905866 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905866) but it failed as well. By now I had done enough reading to attempt a manual install; however, I came across a few issues:
In C:\windows\servicing\packages I found a scary collection of KB files, half of them .mum files the other half security catalog(u)e (.cat) files. By manually opening & accessing the downloaded Windows6.0-KB905866-v31-x86.msu file I thought I could simply replace the 6 files with copy and paste, but ...
I don't have the permission to modify this folder.
How do I get permission to modify it? I am the only user on this laptop.
The other issue is one file specified in CheckSUR.log is not present in the downloaded file. I have no idea how and where to get it. It's Package_for_KB905866~31bf3856ad 364e35~x86~~6.0.26.0.mum
Last but not least, one will notice the suffix ~6.0.26.0.mum. The downloaded file Windows6.0-KB905866-v31-x86.msu contains the same files but with the suffix 6.0.31.1. Any risk replacing 26.0 files with 31.1 files?
Past midnight here, will update on my attempts tomorrow.

First thing to try is to reset the Windows Update mechanism on your PC.
To do this, follow these steps (am writing from memory of XP now i'm running W7, but it's likely to be very similar for all Wintel OSs at present):
1) stop the Automatic Updates service (found in Control Panel/Services)
2) navigate to %systemroot%\softwaredistribution
3) delete everything within that folder
4) start the Automatic Updates service
Then either wait for an update to occur, or go to Microsoft Update (or Windows Update if you haven't already said yes to Microsoft Update) which is found in your start menu, and get it to scan your PC.

I had a problem running updates on Vista 32 desktop (different error code to the originator's although equally as terminal for the updates).
I found a weblog belonging to an Aaron Stebner (google it) and the fix he suggested worked very well.
Give it a try.

A bit late with this reply but from earlier in the thread ( 6th May ) ...
How do you get your chosen font (Times New Roman 14pt) to "stick".
Start Word, Click Open / Templates / Normal - this is the document template that opens every time you start a new file.
Make changes to the template - Font / Font Size / Line Spacing etc etc and when you're happy click "Save".
Every new document will open with these settings.
