Can you tell me if a Lycoming engine has any form of callender life or is it simply the number of hours it has done in the relevent machine, ie 2,200 in a Robbie, 1500 in an Enstrom etc? Many thanks.

If it flys in anything it is based on hours run when compared with the manufacturers limitations and suggestions ie Ground run, Test run, air travel or hover (up or down) or forward or reverse or sideways flight, that way you can judge pretty safely if you will survive the next start...... all that really is part of your knowledge gained in getting your Pilots ticket............ However

If its attached to a combined Harvester, Garden equipment pumps or grass cutting thingys its just when it stops working, thats when you need another bit,... or full engine, quiet simply you walk away ring someone up and order another donkee. the difference between the former and the latter is that with the former sometimes it could be difficult to walk away to use the telephone

Simple really:eek:

You need to look at Lycoming SI 1009

http://www.lycoming.textron.com/support/publications/service-instructions/pdfs/SI1009AT.pdf

Depending on engine/use depends on Overhaul life.
But yes there is a comment on the first page that the engine should be overhauled in its 12th year.
