Heard that yesterday a Mexican 747 (sorry don't have precise details) and a 777 of an unspecified airline had to land in Cardiff to refuel because the controllers refused to let them join the large stack waiting to land at Heathrow. Apparently the stack waiting time was over 70 minutes. Passengers did not debark.

That's a shame because I don't know any Mexican operators of Boeing 747's.

Mexicana fly a Boeing 767 to London Gatwick four times a week. It arrives Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Yesterday was Tuesday?

Passengers did not debark.

No. I am sure they didn't.

<<because the controllers refused to let them join the large stack waiting to land at Heathrow>>

I would need a great deal more information before I accepted that statement. When the inner holds are busy, e.g. during bad weather, aircraft are held well outside the TMA. I could well appreciate if, for some extraordinary reason, a pilot demanded to go to an inner hold and ATC refused on the grounds of traffic..

One divert was a BA 747 from GIG, the second was a BA 777 from IAH, both for fuel due to extended holding at LHR, MAN got the QF001 fwiw.

Does anyone know the reason for the long delays? Was it weather related?

Reduced visibility I believe. LGW was ok though.

"One divert was a BA 747 from GIG,"

Nope, BA are using the 777 on the LHR-GIG service at the moment, the 747 that did divert was inbound from GRU.

The QR 007 A340 diverted to LGW as well--enjoyed seeing that depart mid morning on its way back to LHR!

Reduced visibility to 1200 metres until 10 in the morning.

When conditions improved, aircraft were allocated for landing to both 27R and 27L until 11:30 or so if i remember correctly.
