View Full Version : So why do you want to be a pilot?

Am I the only one who hates this question? You definitely get asked it if you go to a big FTO but I find its incredibly hard to answer. They don't want you to say it's because "I love flying" but what other reason is there? In this day and age there are in my opinion precious few logical reasons too becoming a pilot, logically and monetarily you'd be far better off becoming an air traffic controller or countless other professions.

So why do we have this dream when we are all aware that the romantic image of a pilot that is imbued in us doesn't really exist?

Come on guys and gals, what are your reasons?

There's many reasons.

The most important one to me is that in the air you feel free, just able to do anything (as for me;))

Another reason is that, whilst working in the airlines you will probably get to see quite a few countries/towns/whatever. I personally really like tourism.

Another thing is, I like working in multi crew environment, probably as many others.

It's something I have interest in, always have. It's not a 9 - 5 job.

It's a challenge everyday (:

The list could go on and on.

Happy Landings :)

Vems.

May I refer the honourable gentleman to the following thread:

A quick perusal should provide you with plenty to go on.... AND btw, it's a POSITIVE thread. On PPRuNe!

So generally the aim is to by the time you retire be very tanned, very rich and have numerous venereal diseases? I like it!

I suppose that could also answer the question of where you see yourself in 10 years time ;)

My reasons are:

I loved to do something that involves technical stuffs.
I like to travel to different places (it makes me feel that this planet is so tiny when you become an air crew).
Working in a very confined space.
Working with different people.
Every working day will be different.

There is quite a few more, but I rather not say it!

I like the views and the challenge of being a perfectionist but never managing the perfect flight. There is no 'typical' day, and the variety in shifts and days off beats the drudgery of a 9-5 office job hands down. I get to drive a bus worth millions of pounds, and do a job that very few others can do.

Best of all though, you get to wear a really cool uniform and the ladies love a pilot. Nuff said. :ok:

I trained with a student who genuinely said :

Because I like the uniform

Needless to say he passed his commerical on something like the 8th series at Bournemouth.

I'm pretty similar to Vems and Redsnail with my reasons.

I just love the aviation environment all together. I was flying long haul before I could even speak. And as I got older, and the long flights continued I guess I had prime exposure to the wonder of aviation....and I began to lap up every minute...not being able to sleep the night before departure due to sheer excitement.

Being able to see the world from a different perspective, a beautiful perspective...what a privelege.

I could waffle on n on n on about this subject...

Please don't call my bluff lol
