Question - has the EMB120 operation at Regional Pacific in CNS gone under??

Skytrans have announced that they will be doing the Bamaga/NPE routes http://www.skytrans.com.au/docs/Northern-Peninsula-Links-Announced-16APR09.pdf

I still hear occasionally one of the braz's flying around. Wern't they affiliated with Sky Air World?? If so, why are they still flying?

Not sure about Regional Pacific but didn't Macair start CNS-NPE runs before they went tits up? Also Skytrans looked at going to Bamaga way back when they first started operating the Dash 8's. I remember they did a flying tour of the whole Cape area checking the viability of operating into these airports.

Thread drift someone once told me that the Bamaga/NPE runway was built to handle aircraft no bigger than EMB120 in the Flight West days to stop any competition operating in there. My question is is the Dash8-100 MTOW heavier,lighter or roughly the same as a Braz?

At least the locals will be happy!!

What airport is NPE? Bamaga’s IATA code is ABM. Reference what size aircraft Bamaga was designed for, a quick check of it’s and almost every descent strip on the Cape will reveal a heritage dating back to WW2 and aircraft operating from them such as DC3’s, B24’s and various fighters.

NPE is Northern Peninsula - the old "BAMAGA". Name change - don't know why...

And the Dash MTOW will EASILY go in where Brasilia/SAAB can't - Skytrans gaining Mount Gordon was due to this reason (over Macair)

Regional Pacific still operate the Braz RPT to Bamaga. Nothing has changed.

The braz went to Bamaga today.
Macair only went to Bamaga on Saturday. Reg Pacific used to do Mon-Fri (not sure if they are still doing every weekday)

The restriction on Bamaga is a curly one and goes back quite some time.

The runway is more than long and strong enough however the trick was all Sir Dennis’

Somewhere in the CAR’s you will find a nice little paragraph that states only aircraft with 30 seats or less can operate into an unlicensed airfield.

When Talair closed down Sir D had the Dashes operating along the coast and wanted to make Flightwest a lot bigger and this little gem above was discovered.

Sir D then went about every poxy little place in Queensland lobbying the local councils that they could save big $$$$ by downgrading their airports to unlicensed and Flightwest would operate Brazilia’s…… 30 seats

Flightwest promptly did so and did get big and operated the Braz and the Dash along side each other which we all thought was weird until we learnt of the CAR reference.

Hence you only see 30 seats and below into unlicensed. However I believe that there have been dispensations made more recently to allow other types to use these facilities.

This is not a subsidised route so nobody has lost anything. Anybody can operate the route if they wish provided they get the appropriate approvals from CASA. Aero-Tropics competed with them (or the other way around) and more recently Macair has had a go.

Twotbags - on the right track with ref to regs 30 seat restriction, however, as I recall most ports we (FWA) went to in the Bras and Dash were licenced - now referred to as certified - TL,CS,MK,RK,GLA,BN,MA,ROM,CV,CB(briefly),LRE,HID,BAM,EML,CCY
In fact a good number of the ports we took the B200 and EMB110s into were licenced too -as it was in the 90's....TWB,SGE,BAR,WIN,LRE,CMU,CCY,

Bamaga was uncertified a while back, which RPA exploited to good success.

NPE is and has been for a long time still Napier NZ.

Bamaga still carries the IATA port code of BMG.
