I am very interested in learning about Jimmie Mattern. Does anyone know anything about him?
In 1933 author and foreign correspondent Peter Fleming was in Moscow on an assignment and he mentions in a report " that a young American flyer named Jimmie Mattern had arrived there in an attempt to fly solo around the world." Fleming says Jimmie Mattern departed Moscow after minimum delay and headed east. He (Fleming ) also mentions that the wings of the plane carried the signatures of admirers and well wishers and that these signatures had a speckled appearance due to the fact that they were covered by a coating of ice - !!
Who was this 1933 lone aviator, what type of aircraft was he flying and most importantly did he make it? Men like this should not be forgotten.
