I first posted this a few months ago - the original download site has long since gone so here's a repost for those who missed it first time around.

The technological breakthrough you've all been waiting for...

Seem to remember Danny rather enjoyed this when it first went up. Probably slow down our response to the present ATC environment though.

Forgive my replying on this thread to your comment ref my other post, which was indeed valid. In retrospect mine was a rather OTT reponse to a previous and somewhat lively debate over the ramming of the US Navy aircraft in which the two gentlemen had played a very active part. . . I perhaps quible with the 'phsycotic' part of your comment adressed to me, but childish yes. Mea culpa.

When I first put it up there was some talk of making it available for download, perhaps in the humour section. But that never happened so I thought I'd just post it again in case anyone missed it first time around.

As for the other thread, this is not really the place, but let me just say - people often coin neologisms during psychotic episodes - but we all do it from time to time. So I didn't mean to imply you were suffering from some sort of psychosis Sorry if that was misunderstood. I actually thought "nimbacile" was quite a good invention. Was it yours? Probably best applied to those folks who move to live close to an airport and then start moaning about the aircraft movements (NIMBY + imbecile)

(NIMBY = Not In My Back Yard for anyone unfamiliar with the term)

Stagger: Since no computer mouse is visible, are you using a cordless one? If so, this is against SOPs. Or, is it only that we mere pax cannot use cordless devices but you high and mighty in the pointy end are allowed to?? I think we should be told.

First, I should point out that I'm desk-bound but the user interface for the PPRuNe In The Sky (P.I.N.T.S) system was designed in consultation with several major airlines.

On later Airbus models flight crew have the option of using a conventional mouse on the fold-down tray. However, if that is full of food, or perhaps covered with a newspaper, then the sidestick can be used to control mouse functions. When both mouse and sidestick are in use then functions are interchangeable (e.g. PPRuNe access using sidestick, mouse to fly the SID).

The Boeing 777 pictured has been configured so that the trim wheels control the position of the mouse cursor on the screen. It's pretty straightforward - for example elevator trim all the way back for Jet Blast, all the way forward for Rumours and News.

This reminds me of a post someone sent in maybe 12 months ago showing all the screens displaying Billy Gates "blue screen of death" (reboot your airbus in flight?). Does anybody know where that resides? We have some I/T people around here who really believe pilots could/should be replaced by computers. I'd like to show them this possibility. Thanks, CY

I am on a ship and posting on PPRuNe. Does this make me a PPRuNe addict?

In the internet cafe on board the Pride of Hull heading for Rotterdam and still reading and posting. I really need to get a life...

Flypuppy: If you are on a boat, I think that we can forgive you for wanting to be in touch with the only correct mode of transport

Stagger: Thank you for the explanation of PINTS system. It certainly is wonderful to see just how much you can help the driving people, even though you are a ground based person. In fact, this should put a stop to all those who say that the folks on the ground do not understand a flying trak-ball of what happens in the air. :)

So does anyone have a link to those "Blue Screen of Death" pictures? Weren't they titled something like "Your Boeing has performed an illegal operation"?

Is that a touch screen display in the middle so one may use one's middle (or any other) finger as the input device?

Actually, the equipment pictured (B777) has a touchpad/click combo, see the middle bottom of the pic.

Apparently, some whizzo flyers use this 'mouse' to control functions on the FMC! Crazy guys!
