The scans below show the early and late production layouts, but unfortunately the one we need to know is the worst for clarity…

Can anyone help me decipher is written for these 2 switches, or their best guess?

Oh, it's the Whirlwind (Fighter) cockpit...

Regards

The second one ON ON OFF OFF and OUT OFF ON IN, and the right switch of the top photo has an OFF at the bottom. On the left switch, can it be SUPPLY at the top and EMERGENCY at the bottom?

Why are these switches upside down?

(i.e. Off UP and On Down)

I was thinking it was "SUPPLY" as well, the switches highlighted on the bottom image are there as reference only, as you can see they're alot clearer than the ones highlighted on the top image or Late production Whirlwind, which is what we need to be able to read... ;)

Erk: In those days all switches in UK were down for on, including those in aircraft.

The first time I came across cockpit switches that changed from Down for On was in the mid 1950's; so it does not surprise me that the Whirlwind switches were as shewn.
