I was due to start with an middle eastern airline in a few weeks, but had an email yesterday to say that my start date has been postponed as all recruitment has been put on hold. I have already sold my car, about to move out of my flat and almost ready to go and my last day at work is this Friday. Can they do this at such short notice? I have already signed an initial contract when I got the job, visa has been processed and everything. I have given up everything and now have to get it all back and find another job in the UK (in this economic climate!)

I take it there is nothing I can do, except wait until they recruit again? :(

:ugh::\:confused:

This has happened to alot of us already with Emirates, and it seems that Etihad now will not have training until the end of the year. It's a very frustrating situation considering all the money that we have paid on medicals etc, but realistically there is very little we can do. Luckily I didn't resign from my job, sell my car etc. because Emirates did not give the final approval and tell me to quit my job, so I was being very safe. Did you get this final approval to quit your job? If so, that's really terrible, but as I said I don't think there is much you can do.:{

Hey there Melanie,

:eek:
I am awefully sorry to hear that..its so disapointing the same thing happened to me and a few other girls, 3 weeks ago we were moving out to Saudi and the called us a week before to advise it was a no go- we all had gave up jobs sold cars moved out packed up etc we had visa and everything :sad:
what to do? this is a nightmare of a time to try and get a job here and your heart is set on going and as this process to get out there is so long you just feel at a loose end.

To answer your question apparently they can do this as a contract in the middle-east means nothing, though in your case im sure you will get out there when they start bk recruiting so dont stress too much just use the time to enjoy being with your friends and family...chin up ;)

xx

Skywards,

Yes, I had my start date confirmed...I had my interview back in Feb and most of the girls have all kept in touch...most of them are already there now!! Only me and a few girls have been told that there is a recruitment freeze, so anyone due to start in April has been cancelled.

Hey ho, there is nothing I can do...just feel a fool as I gave up a perfectly decent job and it was really tough to choose between them and the airline...!

:ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh::ugh: :\

Mel,

really really sorry to hear that. I still keep in touch with many people in Dubai and my advice will be to get yourself another job pronto because I doubt we are talking a few weeks postponement. Maybe you could eat humble pie and ask for your old job back? Or down the job centre and get a little office job.

I know this stinks but things really are not too good at the moment. You said a few of your friends are there now. Because you have the visa, it 'may' be worth looking for jobs there now. Hotel front desk type work.

All that has happened is your start date has been put on hold - not cancelled. Just hang in there. Emirates, in terms of fleet have such a large expansion strategy - well did have. Even in this recession, things are still fluctuatting. There has not been a moments peace where you can sit back and assess what has happened and where to go from here. For example, do EK hire contractors for the 'summer' months because they think pax numbers will fall again afterwards, or do they get fulll timers as they think the end of 2009 will either plateau at worse or pick up at best?

Hopefully in the next few days, there could be some EKers on here who can give some idea as to how long the hold is for.

Which Airline was it? If it was Emirates i know that they did make an effort to put through anybody that had got final approval and told to resign from their employment. They were called for training and commenced flying. It may be worth contacting them and explaining your situation.

I applied back to ek after leaving them and received a letter saying they arent recruiting at present. I do know that things are a bit desperate there, and that they are offering staff unpaid leave however, - they have done this before - post 9/11.

I would advise yourselves to get a job, I have had to take up waitressing part time as there is no work where I live as a secretary.

All airlines are on hold at the moment with taking on staff!! Ek dont take summer contractors only in real extremes, eg staff wives that have flown before but wont do what TUI or BMI etc do.

Its going to be tough times ahead!!!
