NEWS STORY

AL-QAEDA THREAT TO BRITAIN
Osama bin Laden's terrorist network Al-Qaeda has threatened to hit British and American targets after a week of allied air raids on Afghanistan.

Terror group spokesman Sulaiman Abu Ghaith said that British and US forces should quit the Gulf or face attacks.

The warning on Qatar's Al-Jazeera TV channel said Muslims in Britain and the US should avoid travelling on planes.

That's the definition of terrorism is it not?
If you are terrified they have already won.
President W Bush said the most stupid thing so far when he told us all to carry on as normal. As if!
Normality is out the window now.
The more I think about this the more I fail to see us getting out of it peaceably.
We have been asleep to the growing rift betwwen east and west. The cultures really are incompatible. I thought we had a fairly robust multi-cultural society in the UK and I believe it would have remained so.
US Christian hardliners and Muslim fundamentalists fill me with portents of doom.
Apocalypse is not my favourite word.
Hinduism and Buddism have had little mention in the last month, a pity as my experience of their societies has been more encouraging than what is now going on.
Anyway it just goes to show how dangerous religion can be and how blindingly stupid we may be to give automatic respect to it.
I have mentioned politics and religion in the same post; am I allowed to do that?

I'm afraid that I don't agree that the "Two Cultures" do not mix. I've been happily mixing them for more than thirty years now without the slightest difficulty and hope to continue mixing them until the end.

What we cannot mix is the anarchic pot-pourri of total freedom - which includes accomodating extremist views. When "minority rights" are given priority over the views of the majority, the result is a shapeless mass of minority opinions and freedom of expression that inevitably degenerates into yob culture. What we need is less freedom and less tolerance. Given time, normal social standards will return. In the meantime we'll have to get used to the consequences of permissiveness - restrictions on real freedom and an atmosphere of constant fear.

Back in the 'swinging sixties' I always wondered why old guys were such a reactionary bunch of old gits. Finally I discover the answer as I too, inevitably become a reactionary old git.

Well Britain and US have serious intentions on Al Quaida'a ass so I guess they had better start worrying as well. Somehow I have a warm and toasty feeling that their asss stands a reasonable chance of bursting into flame any time now.

Mallard, I think Bush's request for us in the U.S. to get life back to normal is not an unreasonable one.

In my view, if we here continue to alter our lifestyle, be afraid to go out to public places, fly on a commercial aircraft, buy useless gas masks and generally live in terror, then Bin Ladin and his cronies won. Really the whole point of terrorism is to strike terror, and he's managed to do that. His group doesn't have to lift a finger for many months now, because Joe six-pack and the soccer-mom wife are now looking over their shoulders constantly and wondering if their next trip to work/school/vacation will be their last.

It’s about time we stopped these Muppets hiding in fu$*ing caves from trying to dictate how we live our lives. They are nobodies, the sooner we get some resolve together and give the V sign to these types the better! They will NEVER intimidate me!! :p

Does he really think that this will scare us??

Come on Asshole, do your worst. And when you do I'll come right back and kick your sorry ass back to the stone age where it belongs.

We can't bomb them into submission and they won't terrorise us into submission. Shame we can't have a stalemate that doesn't involve killing each other.

I am saddened by the loss of life in Afganistan, where innocent. However, if we take the worst case figures and double them we still do not come close to the number of lives lost a month ago.

Don't listen to the do-gooders, and the other agencies with their own agenda's. We are in the right.

Which are the two most tolerant countries in the world? Where are the asylum seekers tying to get into - Afganistan I think not.

OOOOOOOh!!! ScareYYYY!!!Osama's threats really the **** out of me. Anybody who tries to hijack any airliner in the forseeable future is, IMHO, a seriously ballsy terrorist because the pax will surely tear him or her to bits. After all, what have the pax got to lose, chances are they'll be poled into a building if they lose, and they'll probably land safely if they win. I say, go for the bastards, what've you got to lose?

Oh dear!
I wish I kept my mouth shut.
In the long term, any worldwide accomodation has to be one of understanding and a sincere desire to help nations which have fallen behind.
Ludicrous posts about whipping butt, so to speak, are entirely in the wrong direction.
Come on guys, we are are all together living on a small planet, let's try to get it right for everybody.

Now let's all not get carried away with this Liberal tosh...why not give these 'Dune Coons' instant sunshine from FL450, turn their sand to glass, and bug out of there leaving these isolated cave/tunnel networks with a 5000 year half-life. Perhaps too extreme at moment, or shall we wait until a 767 is parked in Piccadilly at 300kts.

I'm not normally lost for words but I have no real answer to right wing twats.
The way forward is not bombing anybody into the stone age.
If you believe that, your children will have a very interesting future.
For every bomb you drop there will spring up a new Bin Laden.
And hey! I'm on your side. I don't want those guys to get away from the most distressing thing I have ever had to witness, a thing which will haunt me for the rest of my life. That had to be a total perversion of Islam.

Total perversion of Islam?

Perhaps a perversion of the Koran, but contemporary 'Islam' is clearly well adapted to the role of 'Sword of Allah'.

If the hat fits wear it.

And you know you aren't allowed to discuss religion on this website by the way. ;)

This distressing topic is inseparable from religion.
Would that it were not so.

Mallard,

We did NOTHING after the 6 people died in the first WTC bombing which by the way was in protest to the SUCCESS of the oslo accords. As a result 6000 died on 9/11.

Burying your head in the sand will do nothiing to prevent this either. Giving in to their demands would just encourage others to do the same. Next thing you know the IRA would fly a plane into the empire state building to get the English out of Ireland.

There is no alternative but to fight, and if they use weapons of mass destruction we respond in kind, all over any country that supported them.

Cheers
Wino

Although we must be very careful not to put all Muslims in one basket, I agree in principle with 100LL. Any BRITISH citizens supporting deadly force against their own subjects are commiting treason and should be shot! Others (non Brits) should at the very least be expelled from the country. It's time to shut these imbeciles up once and for all. If the Government doesn't act soon I fear that the people will, and there will be fighting in the streets of Britain.

And today only on the news was the spokesman for Bin Laden saying that he doesn't understand why the US needs Australia's help.

Well if he bothered to learn history, in 1944 when most Australian troops were in Europe along with US troops fighting Hitler , the Japanese started to move south through SE Asia... Australia was on the hit list. They took SIN but if it wasn't for the US , our merry ass would be not as we are today. That's why we help the US.

Not really relative to overseas folk but the President of Pakistan was saying how over 2000 refugees are in Pakistan , but why won't Australia take 200??.I can see where he is coming from but these people have infiltrated everywhere and whats to say we are not also on the list. Only last week a news report ( its viability not to sure ) was stating a group of 5 or more middle-eastern men were taking photo's and video from a distance and at the base of the MLC tower in Sydney ... amazing. I must state though , I do feel sorry for the genuine refugee's. :(

I have deleted two posts that are clearly meant to be racist. That is completely unacceptable.

Indeed, there is more than a hint that some are hiding behind some not so clever semantics.

NO POLITICS and NO RELIGION and NO RASCISM. It applies to the whole of PPRuNe. For me it is easy, I just close the thread. For you it is easy too. You just keep all your remarks within those bounds.
