Hi Gents, I am an indi film maker here in Perth WA.

I want to film myself 'hitching' from here to LA (and hopefully back) on a freighter.

The project will be shot in HiDef and hopefully be shown at Tropfest in 2010.

'The Stowaway' will be a warts and all exposition on the inner workings of freight and freight pilots as well as following the ultimate hitch hiker...

If any of you would be keen to be a part of the project I would love to chat. Even if you wanted to be in the project but blurred out with no company details exposed I am also quite open to that.

This is a seriously good premise for a project, I am very confident if the right people show an interest we would have quite a little thing on our hands, hopefully art.

Getting into the U.S. not being part of the working crew might be a problem.
When you say L.A. I assume you mean Los Angeles, correct?
Security procedures implemented post 9/11 would make it very difficult indeed. You would have to be listed as a crewmember of some sort, either loadmaster or attendant and I dont know any airline that would be willing to risk that now days.

I dont know how far you have got with this but I dont think you will
have any luck in making this film.

I know for a fact that it will be very hard or impossible to HITCH or gain
access to the inner working of such an operation.

You have to remember that even STAFF who work for such Airlines
who hold a landside pass cannot access the airside part of the operation

I would also re-think the title of the film... What company would want to be associated with a film called... THE STOWAWAY... and have their A/C
shown behind the title.

Your best chance is getting sent by courier in a big box, not getting screened before loading and then sneaking out whilst onboard (the main deck). Then, the title fits the film and you get some footage out of it.... until you get found onboard, or arrive at LAX.

Happened to me many many years ago on frt flt from KRT-LGW.

During night loaded 2 crop spraying a/c. onto B707.
Before departure a/c was checked by military, nothing found, all ok.
As the knackered l/m sat myself on rear seats ready for long sleep.
As a/c got airborne the canopeas on the crop sprayers opened and out stepped their 2 pilots.
We continued our flt to LGW, however now I did,nt have enough catering for crew + 2

Thanks for the responses guys, I just wanted to clarify a couple of things.

Firstly, I dont actually want to stowaway, lol. That is just the working title of my film.

Secondly I am quite happy to pay as SLF, obviously if this could be avoided we would have more $$$$ to produce the project.

They used to send race horses from Perth and Melbourne to South Africa via Mauritius and onwards to Europe and South America. There were also return trips to Perth.
A Bloodstock agent in the UK used to arrange the flights (Forget who).
I am sure those flights if still happening would form a good story line, grooms,horses etc one happy family. They were on the flights we did.

Yes, I agree with an earlier post, the only way I can see this happening is if you are onboard as a crew member from the airline (Pilot, Engineer, Mechanic, Load Master), or even as a "jumpseating" flight crew member from another airline (all of which you are apparently not) approved government official (FAA, Secret Service etc) , or you would have to be a required courier escorting a specific cargo (military hardware, priceless art, racehorses, etc). Otherwise you could charter the plane yourself (big bucks) where one sometimes gets interesting passengers. I once flew a one legged Dane with his Rottweiler and 3000 fur mink as he relocated his mink farm from Denmark to Newfoundland. He chartered the plane, and he was the required escort for his live animals.

Other than that, it isn't like in the old days, you can't just hitch a ride, as it was correctly pointed out that especially in the USA, you could not get past security. But I understand that you can still book passage on a ship freighter. That would be interesting too, and someday if I need weeks of no distractions, and the peace and quiet to write a book, I'll do that. But not if that ship sails anywhere near Somalia!

Thanks for all of the great responses, I guess what I am really looking for is somebody with the right contacts that could indoctronate me with the right freight company. This seems the best way to keep things nice and above board.

"The Ultimate Hitchhiker" has already started with my first post, thanks again for the positive replies, this will be a great treatment!
