A Washington state man died when a helicopter crashed in a field near Moundridge, Kansas this afternoon.

Roger Hershner, 66, of Sequim, Washington., was flying from Lewiston, Idaho, to Virginia for a contract job with the U.S. Forest Service, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

The Bell 206 helicopter was owned by Hillcrest Aircraft Co., based in Idaho.

No one else was believed to have been on board, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Corey said.

The crash happened about 2:45 p.m. near 19th Avenue and Buckskin Road outside Moundridge in McPherson County.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
