I was over the last week in the west part of Germany/East Luxembourg/North Eastern France and was reminded of the number of cold war bases that were situated in this area.
My question is simply were these bases so situated as to allow the aircraft, many of them nuclear equipped, extra time to disperse and carry out their planned missions should the 'balloon go up' ?
Obviously there were other considerations, but it just seemed that there were less bases on the eastern side of what was West Germany at the time. However, there were Russian bases almost on the border with east/west Germany that would have had them over their targets in minutes...
