I don't think that the French have anything to teach the LHR baggage handlers about thieving. It is a tradition that goes back a long way.

The press theory was that enhanced security was causing pax to put laptops and cameras (to contradict Flintsone, just about any camera these days has batteries- exposure meter, automatic wind on, flash ect). I thought such equipment had to be carried in hand baggage and batteries are expressly forbidden for hold baggage.
