Geez... :bored::bored: is that so....
I was also called for an interview last Apr '08 but my current company didnt allow me to leave that time so I have no choice but to call CX and inform them that I wont be able to attend said interview...
I dunno if its a blessing on disguise since I signed another contract with my current company until end 2009...
Lets HOPE for 2010!!

G'day folks,

Can anyone please tell me more than what the CX website says about DEFO? Such as:

'realistic' min flight time requirements,
pay,
avergage promotion time (DEFO to Command)
Also, do most DEFO go to cargo or pax?

Cheers

With any luck the DEFO positions will cease to exist or be severly reduced with this downturn in the market. Second officers are being informed that an upgrade to FO will be around 4.5 years at the best guestimate. There are plenty of us who will take bases to get out of Hong Kong so hopefully we will get first dips at these postions before hiring DEFO, especially now when we may have to take Leave with out pay. (Hopefully one good deed equals another. yeah right :ugh:).

And upgrade to Captain............ who knows, with talk of retirement age being increased from 55 to 65 it may just take an extra 10 years for a command.

If you do get in as a DEFO you wont upgrade before any of your SO counterparts. DEFO are now unified meaning you can fly both pax and cargo depending which fleet you are entering.

But when things do turn around I'm sure the company will keep recruiting DEFO, i just wish they wouldn't. So if you get in - respect the SO cos i know of a few DEFO who don't, and it really gets my goat. most of us are just as qualified as you guys.

besides all of that.... Good Luck.

Gravlox is bitter. Get in line with every other pilot who has been screwed in the last 18 months buddy. Qualifications have nothing to do with status. Its all who one knows and luck. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will be able to relax and enjoy the fact that pilots are narcissistic bus drivers. (myself included unfortunately)

Quite a good post by Gravox I thought.
I am a CN with CX and have a view of both sides. The SO's are getting screwed but the DEFO's are just taking jobs offered.
As Gravox rightly said, many SO's have comparable if not better experience than DEFO's; but they were taken the job offered at the time. In fact, I have more confidence in many of the SO's than some of the new DEFO's.
Gravos was not out of line, perhaps your post is.....

At recent command parties, senior managers have been telling new Captains the same thing. :uhoh:

Interesting to see the operating word "SOME" appearing so much. Yes, naturally SOME pilots are better than others, whether CN, FO or SO.

The important safety criteria in aviation is whether they are "GOOD ENOUGH" to do their respective job. They appear to have passed all their checks and provided they "keep up to speed", they should continue to do just fine.

Surely, the notion that "some" SO's, that have more experience than "some" DEFO's should not come as a big surprise.

Clearly the system is not perfect. Those experienced SO's should not have to go through so many loops to become JFO and then more to become FO's.

Having that said, the new guys at the helm of the training department and the fleet management seem really to work hard to get things right and I think they are succeeding. Give it some time and I believe these issues will be resolved too.

Don't get me wrong. I feel a very high degree of sympathy for the SO's, I really do. It is just an unfortunate side of aviation, that things sometimes don't seem "fair".

Show me someone, who has been in aviation for a substantial time period and who has not experienced that they have been disadvantaged at one time or another. I don't know anyone like that. It just comes with the job. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't.

Just keep the chin up, stay positive and you'll do just fine. :ok:
