Flight returns safely to Melbourne after tyre blowsFebruary 23, 2009 - 8:23AM
A Virgin Blue flight bound for Sydney has returned to Melbourne Airport safely after a tyre shredded on takeoff.
Emergency services had been placed on high alert amid fears the Embraer aircraft, with 79 passengers onboard, had damaged its undercarriage.
Witnesses at the airport said at least 10 fire trucks were on standby when flight DJ807 landed safely at 7.57am.
"Authorities have responded. Emergency services are on site, however that is normal in this situation," said Emma Stenhouse, a spokeswoman for the airport.
She said the left main rear tyre had shredded on takeoff.
"Everyone is safe and well ... it went and did a loop, dumped some fuel and landed safely. Emergency services were activated and now have all been stood down."

:D:D:D A loop, I'd like to see that! Well done crew!:ok:

dumped some fuel

Can the jungle jet do that?

Fuel dumping is not a feature on the 170/190, but perhaps the "loop" was not flown at a constant "g" and the FO hadn't checked the overwing fuel caps.

So I take it that's standard procedure for Virgin Blue to do a loop in the event of a blown tire then? Guess it takes the passengers' minds off the tire problems. :}

For overreacting. They'll get their jobs back when the economy turns around.

Not to mention the "left main rear" tyre.

I haven't noticed that the Jungle Jet has a bogie main gear. Is it a dual bogie, à la A330, or a tripple bogie, à la 777.

Infact, does one call a 777 main gear assembly a bogie?

I'd also be surprised if the pilots didn't face disciplinary action for performing a loop in a transport category aircraft, carrying passengers on an RPT service. :ugh:

In Emma's defense it think she meant a holding pattern while it burnt off fuel not an aerobatic loop.

Good to see Vic Pol, Ambulance and Fire Service turn up very quickly.

Did the pilot declare a Mayday?

Me thinks "loop" of the bay whilst burning fuel in the horizontal plane as opposed to the vertical we are all thinking of.

More quality journalism.....

The "loop" statement was attributed to the airport spokeswoman, so one can assume it wasn't made up by the reporting journalist...

LOL - I was on board that flight ... but I wish we had done a loop - it would've taken some passengers minds of crashing if the undercarriage dug in!:rolleyes:

When I was a kid a bogie was something that dribbled out of ones nose when one had a cold:D
