View Full Version : Japanese ATPL Requirement

Hi this is my first post and I'm not sure whether its the right place to post, so apologies for any inconvenience..

I'm looking at certain job opportunities in Japan, and am aware of the ATPL process over there.. The recruitment agency have said that as per JCAB regulations, applicants must have 250 PIC, 200 Cross country.. From where i come from we get our license with 200hrs, and certainly do not require 200hrs cross country.. My total hours flying 320/330/340 and 744 amounts to over 7500hrs..

My question is: Do the JCAB mean that they require these criteria as part of the light aircraft hours? Does this mean that just because i dont have 250 PIC and 200 Cross country on light aircraft training, i do not meet the reuirement, after flying international routes and possesing half those 7500 as p1??

Thanks for your reply.. Well i really don't fancy working in Korea, many of my friends tried and advised against the place.. I mean its fine, I'm prepared to do the ground school for 6 months etc to get the Japanese ATPL, but my concern is whether my light aircraft hours would be an issue? The fact is, we needed only 200PIC to get the CPL, then it was on to L1011 in my case, then Airbus 320/330/340 and now i fly 744.. I do hold currently a FAA ATPL.. So what i need to know is if the Japanese authorities are going to look at my light aircraft hours, when in fact i have the requirement flying big jets!! Thanks so much..

What gives you an idea that JCAB requirements are for light aircraft only. I don't see that anywhere in AIM-J.
In other words, your heavy flight hours and international flying should meet the JCAB ATPL requirements.

Thanks so much for your reply.. Well the minimum requirements column has one part which give these details, it asks for 3000 hours with command rating etc etc.. Then it gives another box outlining JCAB regulations which say, 250hrs PIC 200hrs cross country.. The cross country part is what got me worried: are they adament on my initial flight training etc?? Its kind of confusing... Thanks

Because i cannot contact the recruiting agency, but they have already sent me the forms to apply, but i don't want to start the application process without knowing the JACB regulations.. I would be so very grateful if there is someone out there who can help me with my concerns, thank you..

The JCAB "assess" your logbook and issue you a Jap one based on what they interpret your experience as. One of the things they look at is cross country but you can use long haul hours for it. I got mine about a year ago with similar experience to yours by the looks of it and it was a non-event (except they take your logbooks for about a month and go over them with a fine tooth comb)

I'm so thankful to you jtr, really appreciate your positive reply.. I thought that i should mention that I'm applying for a first officer job, and therefore my hours are P1us, i have a FAA ATPL, and a command rating.. This is what the JCAB regulations said:
Please note: according to JCAB regulations ALL APPLICANTS must have a minimum of:
- 250 hours PIC time
- 100 hrs Cross country PIC time
- 200 hrs Cross country time
- 75 hrs Instrument flight time
- 100 hrs Night flight time
I have over 7500 hours most time is p1us, so i hope my requirements are ok with the Japanese.. Thank you so much..

FWIW my P1U/S time was credited as P1 and a quick glance at their assessment of my hours shows they seemed to give me cross country credit for all my longhaul time.

Hello.. I'm still having trouble with the recruitment agency on the Japanese requirement thing, they simply don't seem to know anything on this issue, and the application form for Air Japan, has this little box to fill in the hours for the Japanese authorities. I would be very very appreciative if you could kindly give me your email address so that i can communicate directly with you on this matter, or otherwise my address is: [email protected]. i would be very grateful if you could give me any contact details that i can quote to Parc aviation so that i can verify this.. Airplane driver.

If you cant work this out you will never pass the japanese ATPL. Actually I have doubts youll make it anyhow seeing as though youve been told the answer on three occasions on this thread and still dont :mad: get it

Take all of your heavy jet time and make it cross country time. If Air Japan dont like this assessment, they will adjust your totals before submitting your application to the JCAB. Simple.
