Looks like something out of the http://www.pprune.org/aviation-history-nostalgia-86/ section.

Dusk

I do have my suspicions about its origins so I thought I'd give it a run on Freight Dogs first. If there's no joy here I'll try AH&N later.

I'll tell you where it is if you tell me where it was.

Looks like the right hand side passenger entry door on DC-3 airplanes...and yes, some were made this way.
Quite a few, actually.

Some early DC-3s and a huge number of licence built Lusinov LI-2s in Russia.
Hope it helps

The vents at the bottom make me think it's not an entry door.

I agree it seems unlikely to be an exterior door. Might it be an internal in the hold for access to electrics bays?

I'd suggest it's an inward-opening toilet door, going by the hinge layout and lock next to the handle.

Dear Moderator

Could you please move this thread to Aviation History & Nostalgia. I think it's run its course here.

Thanks

Before you go, I think that it's an old cockpit door (DC-3, DC-4, maybe a Beach-18?) with air vents. Note the possible paperwork slot/holder to the right of the door handle, and the marks of a removed certificate holder above.

I have just added an image of the other side of the door. Please see first post.

The door has been identified as a cockpit door from an An-12. The more commonly photographed door on the An-12 is the pressure door between the galley and the cargo hold. There is a lighter door between the galley and the cockpit and that's the one we have. Thanks to everyone who assisted.

Dang...I have flown in an AN12 twice but did not ring any bells.
Did raise my eyebrows however when the loading crew sparked up cigarettes in the area you describe just after take off and started playing cards with beer all round.

Maybe why I did not notice the door!
