A bit of a strange request........

Having spent 27 years as a fast jet pilot in the RAF, I got used to wearing the thick green flying socks. When I left to go and fly fast jet trainers for a "foreign" air force, I took all the left over socks with me but they are now getting to the unwearable stage (too thin....won't stay up etc)

Does anyone know where I can purchase new aircrew flying socks?

This thread reminded me of the scene in some mothers do 'ave 'em when Frank Spencer goes to RAF reunion and when greeting crusty old Wing commander who ask "RAF ?" to establish where he was based. Good old Frank replies "socks" as it is the only item of issue clothing he has retained, priceless. :ok:

TCG - I have still got a few pairs. If you are going to a reunion in Belgium in the summer I might swap a pair for a beer.

Lmnav - not decided whether to go to the reunion yet.....bit of a long way to go! If I do, I'll take you up on the offer........Leffe Blonde.....Ahhhhhhhh! .....Brings back memories.

Well, don't ask any current serving aircrew as we can't get hold of any. Your best bet is to find someone else wandering around station and ask them where they got theirs:hmm:
or try a surplus store (near to a flying unit)

Just come in from a walk in the snow for a look at PPRUNE; by coincidence I'm wearing my last pair- they're great in your wellies and are still going (Not smelling)strong nearly 20 years after they were last inside a grow-bag!!

They were by far the best item of flying clothing when I was demobbed and I don't suppose that's changed in the intervening decades. I wonder if the inventer ever got a Knighthood??!!

TheWizard there are plenty around here. So many that I may have to throw some out to make room for all the long sleeve green t-shirts and lonjohns...:}
Lmnav, don't you have any mates who might be able to spare you a few pairs?

13 quid a pair does sound a bit over the top, but I find hard to believe you couldn't find heaps of suitably constituted comfy socks if you had a look round the department stores and camping/adventure shops - let them go!

I might have a pair (new, folded, feet, for the use of) lying around, if you can wait a few days, as not at home at the moment.

Chinook - thanks for the steer - found them this time

2port - thanks for the offer - send me a PM and I'll reply with an address

Arm out the window - not much call for thick woolly socks in the middle east but thanks for the tip

And thanks to everyone for the replies - even the sarcastic ones!!

Trying to trade in items bought from the public purse? Disgraceful!

You can buy similar socks (bootsocks) in Yeomans camping shops; if anything they are better quality and cheaper.

Anyone need a brand new nav-bag? :oh:

SAC J**n E****d C***y did that very sucessfully at Odiham in the late 70s.........................until he got caught. He may even have had a stall at Blackbushe....

I think I sat on his Court Martial on my first tour! He wasn't alone in his exploits.
