Old Cine Film footage wanted?

I was wondering if any of you have ever shot any cine film (sorry, that’s ‘home movies’ for our Colonial cousins!). I have been working with Avion Video here in UK who are actively seeking out any film taken during the 1950s or 60s, particularly at airports,air shows, or taken by aircrew and converting it to DVDs. They pay for any footage used, but are rapidly running out of ‘new’ material that hasn’t been seen before.
They have tried getting material from various museums and BAE Systems but have run up against brick walls trying to extract films on Viscounts, Vanguards and other historical stuff. Have you ever shot cine film at any airport in 8mm or preferably 16mm format, or have seen any films that the owner might like to see digitally improved and made into a DVD? You would be amazed at what this chap can do with silent film footage with dubbed authentic sounds added and he would like to add:

(1)I can restore film and add authentic sound, using the best quality techniques currently available. I care about what I do. Clips from DVDs like the LAP ones or Independent Airlines are on my website at www.avionvideo.com (http://www.avionvideo.com/) so people can see what I do.
(2)If this material isn’t restored and transferred to a digital format it will be lost forever once it’s gone beyond PNR.
(3)I pay to use it.[ £500 per hour of edited material] Not a lot, but the cost of having the film transferred is very high.
(4)Amateur filmmakers’ reels are as valuable as those shot professionally, because it was mainly the enthusiasts who bothered to shoot what is now unavailable in mainstream media.


Anything shot between 1950-1980 is sought, basically anything pre video camera era.

Hope some of you can now go scurrying to have a look in your attic if you think you might have some reels of cine film with aircraft on it, stored away that may be lost if not captured and preserved for all to enjoy!

I had tons of aviation 16 mm movies (training mostly) -
Airlines, Air Force, Navy...
Had a Bell and Howell sound projector, even a Bolex H-16 (silent) camera.
Tons of movies - on small and... 14 inch reels...
Tried to get a few $$$ for them. Was told was worth NOTHING.
Ended top of the trash bin.
Since stores said "worth nothing" - Was not going to give them for free.

But try to buy a Leica M4 with Summilux f:1.4 - Mortgage your home.
I rather throw cameras away that give to them for $20.oo

I have around 1,150ft (c.75-mins) of Standard 8mm Kodachrome cine film taken between 1959 – 1963 (and later). An interesting taster – see the screen photo of the Gatwick departure hall as it appeared around lunch-time on 19th April 1960. I’m precise about the time as my log book records we arrived at Gatwick 13.05 and departed at 15.00. The occasion was when I and my crew were tasked at very short notice to fly Julian Amery, the then Colonial Under-Secretary of State, to Nicosia for talks with Archbishop Makarios and Mr Kutchuk. These talks led to the creation of the Sovereign Base Areas.

Note the ‘busy’ departure check-in desks on the left. With just two pax checking in!

Gatwick footage was shot on ‘fast’ Black and White film because I shot some footage of Count Basie and his band inside The Astoria, Finsbury Park at around that time. Kodachrome would have been too ‘slow’ to record footage taken inside.

This is THE 'real McCoy' ! Many thanks Tony, have replied to your pm and will be in touch again shortly.
Great shame that others have disposed of similar material or have had relations that have 'disposed' of it on their behalf, not realising its historical significance. It is so easy to dismiss this as , " oh that's old cine film, since superceded by analogue video cameras and now digital cameras, so won't be any good keeping that". Today's techonology may have replaced these, but it can also embrace and improve old material providing it has been looked after. Fingers crossed that others may find some old cine film.

My father shot tens of thousands of feet of cine film, starting in the late forties.

Most of this is deposited with the Yorkshire Film Archive at York.

Although the subject matter of most of the films is non-aviation, a great deal of footage exists relating to aviation included airshows from the '50s, '60s and '70s, Heathrow and Manchester from the '50s onwards, together with various general aviation subjects - crop spraying in Lincolnshire, Shuttleworth Collection, Kings Cup Air Race and pleasure flying for example.

I was hoping to catalogue the films, but to date simply have not found the time - my father having passed away some ten years ago.

It's a shame these films cannot be aired, as they would no doubt be of interest to aviation enthusiasts. At least they are safe - some footage was the subject of a 'The Way We Were' episode on TV a few years ago.
