Alan, Martin and I take great pride in recognizing the tremendous support and efforts of the above team of professionals last Thursday during the morning of significant operational disruption occasioned by both low visibility and the unreliability of some airport landing system components.

As a result, a large number of flights were diverted and delays at gates accumulated rapidly. A number of flight crew exhausted their mandated duty hours and had to be replaced. After all standbys were utilized and to ensure operational integrity, many of our flight crew were contacted on days off to assist in covering flights. Without fail, when contacted their response was rapid and positive. Commanders also exercised maximum Captain Discretion when requested and often without request. Flight Crew kept passengers informed and coordinated with the company’s Network Control team at all levels. A number of Training Captains provided additional flying support above their expected duties. In all, complete cooperation and teamwork by our Flight Crew and Fleet professionals was evident that morning under very trying circumstances.

Additionally, several FDM’s, Fleet Managers, Superintendents and the Manager, Regulatory Affairs stepped away from their normal duties to provide additional in-depth support of the flight crew’s operational needs. With this assistance, what could have been a commercially difficult operational event was quickly contained. Normal system operation was recovered in slightly over 24 hours.

This was truly a team effort and supports our contention that leadership and dedication can make the difference. Our sincere appreciation to each of you who assisted and performed well above expectations. Your passengers - our mutual customers - appreciate the efforts and we thank you on their behalf.
