View Full Version : Engineering acronyms

Can anyone point me to a downloadable list of engineering acronyms? I am in the process of training a non native English speaking mechanic the ropes.

As an example, reading through the list of outstanding ADD's and trying to decipher them. Not only does he have to translate some of the unillegible scrawl that has been written by previous engineers, he has to understand what some of the TLA's mean. (Three letter abbreviations)!

An Airbus related one would be preferable, but if there is a generic one that explains basic engineering terms and phrases that would be great.

Try and explain "GRND TSTD SATIS" to a Spanish speaker!

Quite apart from explaining GRND TSTD SATIS to a Spanish speaking mechanic it is also sometimes hard to explain to the guy who entered the snag. All too often GRND TSTD SATIS does not translate to a "fix", especially with some of the transient faults which we all encounter at times.

I hear ya! An all too easy pen off, but used regularly as you say for a transient fault.

This mechanic has recently passed his FAA A&P, but nowhere in the syllabus does it cover how to write in a tech log. It is something that is learned with experience. Imagine you are trying to learn it in a foreign language. Learning to speak English is one thing. Learning to read and write technical English is quite another kettle of fish.

There is a handy little manual that I use from time to time published by Rockwell Collins... It's called "Collins AVIONICS GLOSARY", "A handy compendium of terms and acronyms associated with the avionics industry".

Even though it's focused on Avionics stuff it's still pretty handy. Like most of us, I love and hate acronyms in aviation. I love em because it saves time, but hate them because there's just so many of them I can never remember the buggers :\

The ISBN (Sorry, International Standard Book Number :}) could be 074-3684345.

Good luck :ok:

I once saw a drawing for an "A R S E Repair".
Really.

Unfortunately I can't remember what it stood for, but I imagine the engineer who came up with that one had a good chuckle.

Very useful post. I have been looking for something like this for a while. Anyone know of any other good acronym dictionaries?

On a Boeing I'm sure TLA is Throttle Lever Angle. :O

For my tuppence worth, if airlines would increase the size of defect entry areas in the Tech Log then maybe abbreviations would reduce. Who knows?

Another reason for their use is that out on a line station it is the Eng/Mech making the entry who also has to enter the details in the computer, either direct to a system database or a SITA signal to a third party base.

Unless you can type 70 words/min it all creeps into brew time. :ok:

I thought the Boeing term was Thrust Lever Angle. Isn't Throttle lever Angle an Airbus term?

My favourite is LOW. as in

Defect..FMC inop, unable to enter waypoints.

Answer To ADD iaw MEL. LOW.

The LOW can be used for all avionicy nav type defects
It stands for Look Out Window.
