Following on from the thread drift in the 'I think this was funny' thread - anyone have a favourite island or islands?

Must say the Scillies, as portrayed in the 'Island Parish' TV series look well worth a visit. Scottish islands - great, but only when the weather's good, which is not very often.

Spent a very pleasant week in El Hierro, the least well known island in the Canaries, a mere 2 hours away from Tenerife by sea but a world apart, lovely climate, heat tempered by the sea, trade winds and mountain mist. Hired a car and the hire bloke said 'just leave it at the ferry with the key under the driver's seat' - brilliant.

Skomer Island, Wales. Great for a day.

Tai Island, Fiji. Great for a week or two.

Lanzarote. Partly because people think it's a dump (it isn't) and therefore stay away. The chavvy brigades are all herded into one of two places & I'm left to enjoy the flying, the Manrique legacy, the little villages & the breathtaking landscape. Love the place.

Britain too. Which is deeply unfashionable, but I wudden wanna be one of they furriners.

the Manrique legacy

Lanzarote and it's attendant islets have been on my to do list for a while Parapunter.

Being sent to a job in the Cape Verde Islands next month and shall take the opportunity to book a few days spare to explore. Just discovered they've tied the CV Escudo to the Euro - bah humbug!

This is Manrique's restaurant on El Hierro, 3500 feet down to the sea. A favourite paraglider launch site on the roof.

Now you see, you put that piccy up & immediately I'm back on Famara ridge, gliding past that building, contemplating wafting down to Caletta de Famara, which is one of my most favourite spots in thw whole wide world, for a cold beer & a seafood meal caught fresh that morning. Then again, maybe skip that & head off to Lagomar, or even shoot into Arrecife for a night out at El Convento, ending up at La Factoria dancing in the open air til sunrise.

Of course I haven't been for a few years so it wouldn't surprise me if all that is gone, but one photo put it all back in my head. Lanzagrotty, my favourite island.

Agree with goudie, Pankor was nice as was Lombok, but my absolute favourite will be Dimakya Island located in the Northern Isles of Palawan, Philippines. I must have been there like 8-9 times, a divers paradise. Actually, Paradise full stop.

Bathurst, Melville, Goulburn, Croker, Groote, if it weren't for the locals ruining the serenity...;)

Loved Mauritius!:ok:

Big Island, Hawai`i. Great observatories, snorkelling and lava viewing. Fun at all altitudes. :ok:

Quite so, Mr Mariner. One is clueless as to the acquisition of one of those diagonally slashed "O" keys.

I found Christmas Island (the Indian Ocean one) absolutely fascinating. That said, after a week there you'd go stir crazy.

To me, island hopping off Borneo remains the top of my 'idyllic, palm-treed beaches' memories. Borneo itself is amazing too.
