Found this pic on another site and was wondering what the background to the incident was.
1, Is this pic genuine?
2, Where, when and why?
3, Did that canopy open in time?
4, Is the object in the water another aircraft, or a capsized yacht?

Not a huge shark with a fly-swatter then?

Indeed it was real. The man in the parachute is Eddie Goggins. He had just collided with the the Yak of Gabor Varga during an air race in Malta in September 2006. Tragically Varga drowned. That's the Yak in the water.

Eddie got out ok as can be seen and survived. He was very very lucky.

He is still flying. Last year he won a bronze medal at the Advanced World Aerobatic Championships with no official backing or sponsorship.

I flew with Eddie once. A remarkable experience.

Two aircraft collide, they both catapault off in different directions, and the cameraman, witnessing a hopefully once-in-a-career event, focuses intently and at length on...a small piece of floating wreckage. WTF!?
