FAA IR to MECIR advice

Hi Guys and Girls
I am about to convert an FAA ME CPL and IR to Aussie quals.
I understand that the IREX is quite tough :uhoh:
Can anyone who has gone down this road advise how i should go about it?
Should I take a course, or can I do it alone (assuming average diligent student)
How was the flight test in comparison to the FAA one?
How good are the practice exams that can be bought? Worth the $?
Any projected time frame?
Any advice is much appreciated:ok:

With that overwhelming response, I'll ask another question:

With some background knowledge in IR flying (FAA IR) would it be no big deal to study alone (as in - not in a course) for the IREX?

yes, just buy the bob tait book and read it, pretty much covers it all

My experience is the other way - CASA to FAA.

Do NOT treat IREX lightly. In my opinion it is the toughest of the CASA exam suite. An IR flight test is the same everywhere - numbers/standards must be met! Personally, I found the FAA oral examination to be akin to the Spanish Inquisition and the flight test to be much simpified due to the professionalism and helpfulness of the FAA ATC.

I am doing a similar thing however I have previously passed the IREX albeit many years ago.

The IREX exam is significantly more difficult than the FAA exam. I studied on my own for the IREX from what was then a loose leaf publication (dont recall the author but I probably have the book somewhere). I am about to purchase a new book for the conversion, I reckon between the FAA stuff and the CAA/CASA I must be near a world record for number of flying books!

From what I have been reading on pprune recently there seems quite a few of us doing FAA to CASA around this time.
