Fury at airport chief's £90,000 rise

FURY erupted today after details emerged of a £90,000 pay rise for the boss at cost-cutting Manchester Airport.

Ringway chief executive Geoff Muirhead's annual salary rocketed from £160,000 to £250,000 - only weeks before 100 jobs are axed to save money.

The pay hike of more than 50 per cent was awarded in late June after Mr Muirhead landed a powerful new role in overall charge at Manchester and its sister airports in Humberside, Bournemouth and the East Midlands.

Airport chairman Brian Harrison, who recommended the rise, today defended the decision and said the 52-year-old executive deserved every penny.

But the Transport and General Workers' Union, which represents hundreds of airport staff including security guards and car park attendants, slammed the move and said workers were furious.

'Greed'

Regional secretary Dave McCall said: ''This fat cat rise shows that corporate greed is alive and well and living in the boardroom at Manchester Airport.''

Stockton-on-Tees-born Mr Muirhead's pay was increased after a summer boardroom revolution which brought him a bigger role following the £241m purchase of Bournemouth and East Midlands airports.

His previous £160,000 post was mainly concerned with developing Manchester, but the new job saw him move ''upstairs'' to oversee expansion at all four company airports.

His annual pay was temporarily upped to about £200,000 while Mr Harrison employed recruitment consultants to advise on a new salary.

The £250,000 figure was put forward by Mr Harrison and rubber-stamped by representatives of the 10 Greater Manchester councils, which own the airport.

Within weeks of the decision, 10 senior managers were axed and a further 90 jobs were cut to save cash. Mr Muirhead last week predicted a 10 per cent fall in passengers in 2002 in the wake of the US terror attacks and announced a freeze on expansion schemes.

Managers across the airport have been told to tighten purse strings and a leaked consultants' report recently revealed contingency proposals for further sweeping staff cuts.

The cutbacks have led to the TGWU launching a consultative ballot of members to gauge opinion over industrial action. Mr Muirhead, who has overseen rapid expansion at Manchester after being appointed chief executive in 1994, was abroad on business late yesterday and was unavailable for comment.

Following Mr Muirhead's promotion, John Spooner was appointed Ringway's managing director and began making cuts, including announcing 90 job losses.

Labour MP Paul Goggins, whose Wythenshawe and Sale East constituency includes the airport, is to meet unions at Westminster tomorrow over the aviation industry crisis.

Not only Geoff Muirhead but his sidekicks Messrs. Spooner and Quayle also had large payrises. Get rid of these three and keep the ten Marshellers and those in the bird scaring unit that are being made redundant as they are far more usefull.

This follows on the acquisition of East Midlands and Bournemouth
airports earlier this year, and Humberside in 1999. The company was
re-structured and is now The Manchester Airport Group: Geoff Muirhead
becoming the Group CEO. The Manchester Airport Group is now the second
largest airport group in the UK, after BAA.

The five divisions are: Manchester Airport Division, Manchester Airport
Aviation Services, Manchester Airport Ventures, Manchester Airport
Developments and Manchester Airport Regional Airports.

Each subsidiary has its own director - hence the appointment of John
Spooner as MD Manchester Airport Division.

Would this be the same staff cutting Manchester Airport where there were no security staff on duty in T3 last Saturday night to let people airside to get to aircraft then? Perhaps it's a different Manchester that is so overstaffed that they need to cut even more staff.

This of course is the same Manchester Airport that takes over an hour to get cans from a diverted aircraft because they only just have enough staff on duty to cope with whats already expected, never mind the odd divert. Can't wait for the first bad wx of the winter down south with LHR, LGW, STN, or LTN out of action or mabe even a combination. Chaos will ensue due to no staff.
