O/K, let's look at some pro's and con's of the big bus! Talking to colleaques that fly it, it is incredibly quiet and this makes sleeping difficult because you can hear people talking and coughing and doing whatever 480 people generally do at 40,000 feet. Most aircraft drown out normal cabin noise by the droning of the engines or the slipstream sounds. Is this a pro or a con? It has amazing runway performance and appears to run rings around a 747 by using less runway to rotate. This is assumed both aircraft MTOW doing YMEL-KLAX. Obviously a pro? Anybody here who has flown both types like to give a qualified observation? :)

It should also be noted that the difficulty sleeping being attributed to the the quietness of the A380 is probably more about the positioning of the crew rest and the lack of noise insulation than it is about the aircraft being 'too' quiet.

The 767 never had a great crew rest but QF stuck some insulation on one of them and it was a significant improvement on the older ones. Unfortunately they never extended it to the rest of the fleet and it's a moot point on the 767 now anyway.....or at least it is for junior scum like me! :ok:

Two mini cabins. Side by side and crew sleep laterally across the aircraft, not longitudinally. Only got a quick glimpse in it but here is the piccie. This is taken from the door to the flight deck and looking right. If you looked back left there was a corridor about three or four metres long and then the steps leading up to the flight deck.

It's called sleep deficit, caused by multiple time zone changes and back of the clock duties.

Knight- We DO carry earplugs - but they have no effect in silencing a baby crying one metre away from your head, or stopping the higher freq noises like the call chimes.

I flew night freight for 7 years and I (mostly) slept through the bedlam of a family getting up and getting ready for school - including mum yelling at them, siblings yelling at each other, running up and down a wooden hallway etc etc as well as general noise that goes on in the world in daylight.:{

As an alternative, get an Ipod, play some recordings of white or pink noise enough to drown out the babies crying.:ok:

Well...after looking at Keg's photo i think you guys can have it all. I don't care about the paycheck, i stick with my Regionals and my king size bed at home every night.
(Maybe the occassional overnight stay in queensize bed equipped motel.)

You are lucky. In my day we didn't have crew rest, they used to tie us with barbwire to the fixed undercarriage in icing. And we used to have to pay company for pleasure of working there. Tell pilots that these days and they wouldn't believe ya.

P.S. It's they're not their. Hope I haven't made a spelling era.
