High altitude flying

I don't know all that much about the performance of most business jets today, but I have read that they can cruise at altitudes in excess of 50,000 feet! Would anyone who has flown that high and has pictures be willing to post them on this thread?

Many of the high end biz jets are certified to 51.000ft. Lear 60XR is one of them, for instance. Don't think they cruise up there that often, though. Maybe on the odd transatlantic/pacific hop.

The Gulfstream 5 and 550 are certified and able to fly at FL510. I always chicken out at FL490. Nice and quiet up there, not much traffic conflict at all. Sorry, don't have any pics for you.

We had our Learjet 40 at 510 during the delivery (and got the 510 tie pin) but it certainally wasn't going to stop there long enough to cruise.

Went to FL510 at night in the Citation 10, but you would not really hang out there, the aircraft was fine at 490 but just slowed up considerably at 510. We did it just to say we had.
Once there we requested lower.

Yeah just photos outside of the horizon and sky. I love the deep dark blue sky you see up at that altitude.

I do hope you were not doing 2.4 from the pics it looks as though you were over the London City area??? if not London why were you doing 2.4 over land :O last time we we were allowed that sort of speed over land was departing the coast line at 45 degs over the North sea on a high cap intercept.

Dramatic, but hardly the case. Are Concorde drivers sterile? How about astronauts? I have several friends that have spent hours upon hours at high levels (FL410 and above) without apparent problems. Their kids are testament.

Is far as I know unless you're flying at higher than FL490 then there's no requirement for cosmic (aka ionising) radiation monitors.

However, there is a requirement for aircrew to be advised of CR if there is a risk of greater than 1mSv a year exposure. ie pretty much any one flying a jet above FL300. 6mSv a year means individual monitoring and roster changes etc.

We use "EPCARD (http://www.helmholtz-muenchen.de/epcard2/index_en.phtml)" and there's also "CARI"
