Qantas, Tiger, SkyWest, Virgin, Jetstar Command Requirements

can anyone out there tell me what the command requirements are for the above carriers?

Well the Qantas requirement for command these days appears to be "grey hair is needed 'cos it takes so freaking long":eek:

About ten to thirteen years in depending on your aircraft type and then jump through all their fiery hoops.

My missus informed me the other day that Max's comments about grey hair are indeed true. I'm still in denial. :ok:

VB's minimums are "500 on company aircraft" but anyone joining now will probably have a decent wait ahead of them. I think 5 years is a fair rough estimate.

Yusef, maybe a bit quicker if you're interested in the left seat of an E-jet, but as for the 737, definitely. Maybe a bit longer even... However, still a lot quicker than sitting around waiting at the Rat.

For all operators.

Must hold an ATPL or complete ATPL prior to acting as pilot in command.

Plus hold the minimum experience as required by CAA/CASA.

For NZ it is in Part 121, I would have a guess that Aussie is similar. So therefore the legal minima would be as per Part 121, but getting a command in a large airline usually takes so long that Commands are no where even close to the legal minima.

121.507 Pilot-in-command experience requirements
Each holder of an air operator certificate shall ensure that each person designated as pilot-in-command of an aeroplane has acquired, prior to commencing the training specified in Subpart I or Subpart M for pilot-incommand, at least—

(1) 1500 hours of flight time as a pilot, including—
(i) 500 hours in the type of operations to which this Part applies; and




(ii) 100 hours of instrument time at least 50 hours of which is acquired in actual flight; and(2) 100 hours of night-flight time for operations to be conducted by the person at night.

cheers. Thanks for the ATPL requirements. Im pretty sure most (unless your in QF) have ATPL's prior to flying big jets.

More interested in company requirements though. Trying to get a perspective of what is seemed reasonable now days in Australia as far as COMPANY MINS go.

I am sure you will find that those are most companies minima, what people are getting commands at is only a function of expansion or lack there of. The only airline type requirement I have seen is with upgrade from relief pilot or second officer as some airline call them to command requires 6 months as second in command prior to command training. (paid at command pilot rates though)

Most airline companies I have had experience with have no internal published command minima except to reflect that in the rules. Some GA operations I know of have a command minima that is totally flexable depending on pilot supply.

Loco in Europe.

Mins at the moment for command are 2900 total, 1500 Jar 25 hours (multi crew pilot) 500 with the company and 500 total 737. And additionally one winter season.

You also need two good sims with a good or better and a line check recommending you for a an upgrade.

All told could be done in under 3.5 years for someone with 200 hours on joinging. :eek:
