As was widely reported by various Irish Enthusiasts' web sites Virgin 021, operated by G-VSEA, reported a technical problem in Shannon ATC air space and headed for Shannon where it made an approch with emergency vehicles in attendance.

The problem was a temperature alert in one of the wheel wells.

During the approach Virgin Ops, having had a briefing from the crew and the tech department, directed the aircraft to return to Heathrow and the aircraft overshot SNN, climbed to 15,000 feet and headed east.

Just before crossing the Irish coast Virgin ops re-directed the aircraft to Dublin where it could receive tech support and the aircraft made its way up the east coast to Dublin, dumping fuel en route in a hold at TULSO at 10,000 feet.

On landing in Dublin the problem was traced to a faulty sensor.

The flight left for Washington where it arrived 6 hours late.
