Emiratis hope that the global economic downturn will reduce the number of foreigners pouring into their country and give them a chance to reassert their way of life.

I have to say that I thought it was about as well-balanced as any view I've read on the attitude of many locals (and not just since the recent economic meltdown).

Many locals I've spoken to have for some years now expressed grave misgivings about the negative side of the growth Dubai has experienced, particularly on the younger generation of locals. At least the ones interviewed in the article admitted they enjoyed the luxuries that have come along with the perceived negatives.

Seems a bit late to be concerned about change...

I better don't elaborate on my views of the very young local Emirati, who reversed with his HUMMER - what an outright stupid car anyway - over the poor english wife, which died thereafter in front of her husband on the walkway - as is terrifying lecture on this weekends 7-days - Disgusting !!
