Am I right in thinking that helicopters seem to fly lower than fixed wing aircraft? I'm not talking about police or commercial types, just R22s compared with single engine Cessnas and Pipers. If so, why?

Yeah, Iv'e noticed that as well, esp the R22's they fly more or less thru the woods.

I don't think iv'e ever seen an R22 above 1,500ft??

IIRC,
An a/c shall not fly lower than 500' over a "built up area, or habitation". A single engined a/c is [I think] limited to a minimum of 7-8000 ft over Londinium, so that it can "glide clear" in the event of an engine failure. However, a chopper can "autorotate" into some fairly tight spots. That may be the reason, or I am talking bolleaux [as usual]:ok:
