Steve, glad to hear you are still hanging in there.
For those interested, I understand he is critical, but stable at present, has already had some surgery, with more to come. I can pass on a contact number of the person co-ordinating visits for anyone wishing to do so if they wish to pm me.

A thread on the Private Flying forum also had the following from "Stiknruda":
My thoughts are with Collette, Francesca and Josh and I am really rooting for Steve, my best friend. His family are being well supported as they continue their vigil at Addenbrookes. He is being ventilated and is due for the next in a series of operations on Monday.

Saw Steve yestaerday afternoon - he still looks just like Sean Connery (according to P!).

He's still unconscious and expected to stay that way for a week/10days. The issue being that when they reduce levels of sedative, his cranial pressure increases. It is expected that with continued rest the pressure will subside naturally and sedative levels can be reduced to the point of consciousness.

He shook off a fever on Sunday and underwent 5.5 hours of op on his burns yesterday. He has a couple of spinal fractures.

He is not out of the woods but each day is a new day.

P and the boys aware of the amount of good feeling and vibes from this forum. I thank you all on their behalf.

I've had the priviledge of knowing Shutty since 1977 when we joined Yuas together. Met on the train from Leeds on way down to Donny, (mutual short haircuts gave the game away), and we hit it off straight away.

An absolute ace guy in every way with a wonderful family. Recent events have come as a terrible shock for us all and our thoughts are with them. But one thing is for sure. Shutty has always been and always will be a fighter. So I have every confidence the old bugger will pull through and live to fly another day.

Get well soon Skullduggery. Looking forward to our next ale sesh with compulsory tales of daring-do. Ruffo

P and the boys remain strong and focussed and are being well supported by friends.

Steve had more surgery yesterday (in excess of 7hrs) to change dressings and do more skin graft work . Went well by all accounts.

He had a change of medication on Tuesday and this has significantly reduced the inter-cranial pressure (ICP). There was some discussion about reducing the level of sedation but this is not yet assured.

He is due for more burns related surgery tomorrow.

All in all good steady progress.

Keep it up matey!!

Steve had 5 hrs of surgery yesterday - new dressings and the tracheotomy as alluded to. He is due back Fri for new dressings.

His sedative was reduced last night and mid evening he opened his eyes twice for about 3 mins each time. Family v excited! He may have had more sedative reintroduced last night to stop movement until the back injuries have been fully assessed.

Progress!

The following is extracted from the "friends and families" daily update that is circulated:

Paula has now met with the clinical team to discuss the results of the
MRI scan. The lead neurologist has assessed that the damage to Steve's
brain is massive and irreparable. The decision has been made to
withdraw all medical treatment with exception of pain relief. It is
not expected that Steve will survive until tomorrow.

Typically with Steve, he has made plans to help others, and his organs
will be used to help those able to use them lead a normal life.

Onthe words of one of Steve's nurses,
"It's time to let him fly."

Paula is aware of the support shown from this forum and cleared the above wording.

Paula rang me at lunchtime and invited me to come and say goodbye. I feel very privileged to have been counted amongst his friends. There were about 20 people at Addenbrookes this afternoon. Paula and boys bearing up remarkably well after an incredibly harrowing 3 weeks.

Will post details of the funeral as soon as it is confirmed.

Provisional date: 28Nov09
Location: 12 miles west of Norwich then Norwich itself

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .
Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Rest In Peace my friend.

The passing of one of our own is never easy. I can only hope that if the suffering of his family and friends, can be eased just a little, in the knowledge of how much he is liked and respected, and how greatly he will be missed, then our hopes, thoughts and prayers for him will not have been in vain.
My thoughts and deepest sympathies are with both you and your family.

May you finally rest in peace.

Thus is the earth at once a desert and a paradise, rich in secret hidden gardens, gardens inaccessible, but to which the craft leads us ever back, one day or another. Life may scatter us and keep us apart; it may prevent us from thinking very often of one another; but we know that our comrades are somewhere "out there" - where, one can hardly say-silent, forgotten, but deeply faithful. And when our path crosses theirs, they greet us with such manifest joy, shake us so gaily by the shoulders! Indeed we are accustomed to waiting.

Bit by bit, nevertheless, it comes over us that we shall never again hear the laughter of our friend, that this one garden is forever locked against us. And at that moment begins our true mourning, which, though it may not be rending, is yet a little bitter. For nothing, in truth, can replace that companion. Old friends cannot be created out of hand. Nothing can match the treasure of common memories, of trials endured together, of quarrels and reconciliations and generous emotions. It is idle, having planted an acorn in the morning, to expect that afternoon to sit in the shade of the oak.

So life goes on. For years we plant the seed, we feel ourselves rich; and then come other years when time does its work and our plantation is made sparse and thin. One by one, our comrades slip away, deprive us of their shade.

Wind, Sand and Stars, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Rest in peace.

Two Typhoons and the Spit, simply awesome. The missing man break off and the tighter than life turns by the mark 15... can life be measured by the send off, of airborne hardware? If so, then Baldilocks was legend. The wake. THE WAKE! The squadron icons opened up the gates of 41. You were there my friend, I think we saw a glimpse of that smile. It was fleeting but we caught a smirk in the bar, somewhere between 'sweet chariot' and 'hairs on the dicki dido'. Baggley got a long shot and a little guy with a bell, held the spirit of you.History hit the wake and the wake was you. Squadron albums, pixels with hair, the moustache at high speed and your infectious self. You woke the retired and they smiled at your metre and with the recall of hero, we cried the tears of the living.
G-ARAT flew in lessor hands. Today of days, in yesterdays wake of the bold, to see your stiring. You were fine, unseen from the sentinel of flowers but resting well my friend. I'll check again and tell the truth. The Norfolk fields looked well today where your crib of life laid soul top spare. But there's ample space, more than we can fill, now given to you and your extraordinary life... farewell.
