I just heard on the radio that an aircraft had its fuses blown from a lightning strike at Thangool last night.

Does anyone know the details on this one? Was it a QF DHC-8 or a Metro?

I wouldn't doubt about a lightning strike... I operated from TL to BN last night and the light show between RK and GAY was very impressive.... diversions every where. Unsure as to which a/c got struck but does anyone know the outcome of the beacon that was heard last night. I heard the rescue chopper was searching.

Thats Jaba with one b thanks :} :ok:

I have just been informed reliably that the Metro has a few big a$$ fuses and are quite critical :uhoh:. Major power shortages around the a/c when a whole bus goes offline and is not resettable perhaps:eek:.

Thanks Jaba, must've been a Metro then...

Here is the story from the ABC News site

Storm sparks aerodrome woes

A wild storm has caused problems at a central Queensland airport overnight.

A lightning strike near the Thangool Aerodrome, south-west of Gladstone, blew the fuses of a plane preparing to take off about 6:00pm AEST last night, while a light pole from the tennis club crashed through a fence.

Greg Bond from the weather bureau says there has been widespread rain through the region, including reports of more than 110 millimetres at Biloela and 80mm on the Capricorn Coast.

"Particularly over the southern half of the Capricornia region and into the very ... bottom part of the central highlands, where a pretty extensive east-west line of thunderstorms got going through the afternoon and came up from the south and then gradually petered out as it got towards, Yeppoon, Rocky and that sort of area," he said.

Even in a Mighty Metro would you really be preparing to take off into a storm like that?:uhoh:

I assume it was on the ground and the pilot was hiding in the dunny of the terminal building/shed.

Worse has been known to happen...!
During a nasty nasty storm not so long ago there was a power outage (on the ground that is...), so there was nothing much to do but sit around and watch the storm. Watched as lighting struck the airfield, then less than 5 sec later a Chieftain took off into the grey soup :)

Grey soup is OK.

It's that black soup you have to watch out for! :uhoh:

Sounds like it would have been a great night to fly at night in IMC in a Metro with no radar!

Actually it's the green and the yellow soup you really want to watch for.

Thursday night...

Yep the boys and girls will be taking on the storms again this year, without any weather radar, as usual.

If it was Friday night there would likely have been a certain operator's Shrike havin' a go between RK and BN as well... ?! Between GAY and BN, and ROM and BN every other night too.

For Christ's sake be careful you crazy kids! <Makes sign of the cross>

Is this supposed to be some sort of revelation? :ooh:
