I came across a small article about the Flying Tigers before the company was bought by Fed Ex in the 80s and got me interested in the history of them. Anyone here ever fly for them or know a bit more etc? Just curious.

Good book out there too...Tiger Tales-an anecdotal history.

First hand account from a Tiger Pilot, beginning with their first aircraft (I can't recall the type) up to their unfortunate demise flying DC8s, and 74s.

Enjoy!

Flying Tigers did not fail, go bankrupt nor was having any particular difficulties at the time of the FEDEX acquisition. It was a brilliant move by Fred Smith to expand FEDEX and obviously worked well to the betterment of all of us at Tigers and FEDEX. There were approx 1500 pilots on both lists at the merger(some call it the train wreck:)). We are now operating in asia in a similar manner to the Tiger methods used at the time but are hauling a lot of high value"pretty" freight in addition to the "ugly" freight Tigers hauled. The routes/ landing slots rocketed FEDEX FAR ahead of UPS or any other company. Tigers vacancy in the ugly freight was filled by Atlas and others. Demise??? Not even close.:ok:
