Hercules catches fire at Christchurch Airport

NEW 1:50PM Monday Oct 06, 2008

There has been a fire on board a Hercules military plane at Christchurch International Airport.

Smoke from the engine was noticed by staff. An airport spokeswoman says the fire crews quickly brought the blaze under control.

Engineers will now investigate its cause.

From what I understand it was not a NZ herc but a NYANG LC-130 herc, tail number 63-3301. If thats correct, it had just been on a post-maintenance test flight, its been around the airport for a while doing high power runs etc

I had a fire in the tailpipe of a Herc engine once (burning oil from a blown seal). The 'firies' shot a CO2 extinguisher in there and shattered some turbine blades with the thermal shock!:uhoh:
