View Full Version : Job hunting not going well?

Hi all,
Ive just completed my ATPL ground school exams and am hour building whilst reading some of the threads on pprune about all the doom and gloom trying to get a job from pilots who have just qualified to pilots with 1000's of hours experience on jets etc; in the current financial crisis!

My question to anyone who is stuggling to find a job is (for people in the UK):

Have you tried getting jobs just around the British Isles or have you been applying to the airlines overseas, Worldwide and on the Continent?I appreciate that airlines may not be recruiting many pilots, if at all at the moment in the UK, but I can't believe that pilots with JAR licences are not wanted across the globe somewhere. e.g Africa, Asia.

Any comments about your recruitment attempts would be great.

I too was wondering that. All I've seen on here recently is bad news regarding UK jobs but not a great deal about jobs elsewhere in the world.

I am about to start my training with CTC in the new year and I'm hoping that in about 18 months things will be all back to "normal" in the UK. However I'm going to remain as flexible as possible and will take any flying job in the world especially if its in a tax free country! Seems to be loads going on in Asia at the moment.... I am wrong to rely on asia recruiting heavily? Do most cadets only limit themselves to the UK when they graduate? :hmm:

Any comments will also be greatly welcomed!

I'm in the same boat as you and as I understand it there are quite a few jobs out there in India/Africa etc but they all want experienced time on type and there doesn't seem to be anything for fresh out of school pilots.
I would love someone to tell me otherwise as I would take an airline job anywhere as long as it was ICAO standards at least and not one of the airlines banned from entering the EU! :)

Yeah - agreed.

It's a bit of a myth that you can just go to Asia or Africa and jump into an airline fresh out of your FTO. I'm not even talking about jets here, this applies to air taxi work and 'bush flying'.

It may be the case that airlines are recruiting in this part of the word, but if you look at the requirements you will find that they require 1000+ hours, type rating or line experience.

Those who have got the jobs have got a flight out there and litereally travelled the country walking into airfields asking for work untill they get lucky. A bit drastic to say the least. And not a possibility for those with a mortgage to pay.

I'm not saying it can't be done. It can. But it is not a guaranteed 'get out of jail free' card which some seem to think.

Somthing to remember perhaps...

Sure, there's jobs in the Middle East, jobs in Asia and Africa, probably also South America...I don't know.

But you will find, that with your 250hrs TT CV, they probably will put it straight into the bin, unless the recruiter feels sorry for you and gives you an interview haha :}

I'm not saying you shouldn't try Continental Europe though....after all you have a JAR license, so max out your options!!! :ok:

Good luck to the job hunters at the moment, glad I have some time ahead.

5 posts and 4 mention the word "airline". Guys/Girls, broaden your mind... Any job, any company (as long as it safe) should be your taget, specially these days.
And yes Africa might seem like a myth but more likely because people are scare to try their luck there. Not necessarily what you might have dreamt of but for pilots with the will to succeed, it has always been the place. Not that you will land a job from here without pitching up your face but with the right personality, attitude, guts, it should only be a matter of time.
Now with the actual job market, I suggest time is what you have.

I do not want to sound harsh but in my days, I made the mistake to listen to some "well established" airline guy who was adamant that going to Africa was a crazy idea. Now I realise he had never really been in the job market (joined this airline early enough at the right time) and had no idea about job hunting. Only hearsay on his behalf.... So this is how I wasted 2 years, sitting confortably at home, hoping someone will reply to my many, many CVs (worldwide).

Don't waste time, try everything !!!

Trust me it's hard everywhere at the min.

I'm 737 typed and in excess of 500hr's on it and jobs,,,, well there are a couple but they are africa. Prob gonna have to make the jump and hey may well be the best thing i ever do.

As for Asia etc alot of these countries if you do go and work in them you have to resit and do exams to get local licences so that obviously a thing to consider as you may/may not be able to keep your jar one current.

Deffo is an interesting time with so many people in the world wide market from bust airlines like mine in the uk to bust airlines in the states with guys flying them with 1000's of hours instructing etc before the airlines.

As for any job flying well you try paying off loans and rent/mortage and living on what a FI gets these days especially in the winter. Thats is of course after the futher expense of getting an FI rating.

Its totally untrue. All the Indian carriers are in a huge loss and they are actually kicking out pilots and are returning some planes.

Agree.

A spotty 19 yr old with his fATPL from a UK FTO, british residency, british passport, english speaking is NOT going to get a jet job anywhere outside UK/EU.

Unless your dad owns a middle eastern airline :}

Ignore all the brain washing about massive expansion and low cost carriers in china, india etc.

In fact what is worse is if people like Michael Oleary try and get a load of chinese migrant pilots working for ryanair. They'd be so cheap to employ and quite happily put up with ryanair :mad:! It would totally undermine every T&C ever made. If youre a wannabe - thats what you should be worried about. Forget polish plumbers - the UK will be infiltrated by migrant pilots from india/china all looking for greener grass.

with no work permit or right to live in the UE....I doubt it, remember what government said about non EU workers a few weeks ago :}

I'm jumping the gun a bit and thinking about employment before even completing the hour building so I'll see how it turns out when ive got the fATPL.

I was just interested to see if all the job hunters on pprune had spread their CV across the world!
